“Sonofabitch!” Gunner slammed his fist down on the desk. Aggressive Alpha power suddenly filled the room and made every hair on my body rise. “That whole damned Aneta pack better be out looking for that crazy female, or I swear...” He broke off and shook his head. Then, he pinned me with his furious gaze. “Do you think she’ll hurt them?”

I swallowed back my nausea before speaking. “No. I don’t believe Viveca will hurt the twins, and if I know those two little females, they will get away from her the second they can. I taught them what to do, how to run, how to hide, who to trust. They will find a way to contact me.”

“And if they don’t?”

I locked out every thread of doubt and went solely on my gut instincts. “They will find their way home.”

Gunner stood silent for a moment, his hands on his hips as he glared down at his desk. “Okay,” he said finally. “I’m sending some of the boys with you. The more, the better.”

Kern cleared his throat. “Desarae—”

I whirled to face him, the quick movement making my head swirl. “Don’t tell me I can’t go.”

His eyes gentled before he spoke. “Desarae, honey, I’m saying you shouldn’t go racing around chasing a scent in the middle of nowhere. You were poisoned. It might still be in your bloodstream, whether or not you feel it.”

“Kern—”

“I’m saying it’s dangerous. I’m also saying you need to be alive and well when your daughters come home.”

I huffed out a frustrated sigh. Kern was correct, and I hated that.

I gritted my teeth and grumbled, “I feel so useless. So helpless.”

Gunner chuckled. “Get used to feeling that way. It’s part of being a parent.”

Turning to Seff, I said, “Please take me home. My parents will need me, and I need to be up on the mountain when Arteisma and Nereida...”Come home.

Seff’s hands cupped my cheeks. Those dark eyes of his, full of worry, gazed down at me. “I’m only gonna ask you one time. Are you sure this is the way you wanna roll?”

Concern, patience, love, and faith came through our bond and blossomed in the center of my chest. His scent poured out of him in warm waves, and I breathed him in deep.

“Kern is right. I shouldn’t take a chance,” I said as I covered his hands with mine. “So, yes, Seff, this is the way Ineedto roll. Nereida and Arteisma may be very young, but they are also smart and brave.”

“Scary brave,” he grumbled. “They learned that from you.”

“They know we’ll come for them. If they think staying with Viveca is safe, they’ll stay with her. They know how to leave a trail we can follow. If they feel threatened, they’ll leave and hide their tracks from her in the process.”

“What if—”

“I can’t think aboutwhat if’s, Seff. I raised them and taught them since they were babies. IknowNereida and Arteisma as well as I know myself.”

“That’s what’s got me worried. They’restillbabies, Des.”

I didn’t need to share asakanabond with him to understand he had serious doubts.

“Seff?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you trust me?”

Another wave of anxiety flowed through our bond—his mixing with mine—causing my stomach to flutter, then squeeze into a knot. His arm wrapped around my back and crushed me to his chest. He kissed me sweet and slow before his dark eyes locked with mine.

“I trust you with my life, my body, and my soul,” he whispered. “And I trust you know better than I do on some things. But I gotta tell you, those two little females already own a piece of my heart and tracking them down without you by my side will be the hardest damn thing I’ve ever done.”

“I know,” I whispered back.

His love for the twins seeped through his pores and tasted like vanilla on the back of my tongue. From all the emotions flowing between us, he was fully invested and ready to take on the role and responsibility of being a father. My breath caught as I fought back happy tears.
