“Listen, Deck is your only brother, Des. Whether or not he apologizes, you need to find a way to forgive him. He’s not abadmale. Decker is just a...a jerkface.” He grinned and kissed the tip of my nose. “But if you want, I’ll slug him again.”

I smiled. “Okay then, I’m looking forward to our conversation about my jerkface brother.”

He moved around to lean his back against the truck, pulling me to him with one arm around my shoulders.

“In case you didn’t know, the other Alphas will work out what’s going to happen with your pack. They’ll make all the arrangements and take care of everything so you and your parents won’t have the burden all on your own. They can’t do that until after we’ve made the calls. My Uncle Sorin is the Alpha of the Lake Crescent pack. I’ll give him a heads-up and see what he says.”

“I understand.” I wiped my face and turned to see the twins wide-eyed and worried. I pulled a funny face and gave them a thumbs-up. They seemed to relax a little.

Seff pulled out his phone and tapped a number.

“Oh...Hey Jules...yeah...we got here. Sorry, we didn’t call. Big snowstorm, and there’s no reception up on the mountain. I need to talk to Sorin... Oh, okay...well, listen.” He paused, took a slow breath, then went on. “The last two rogues attacked last night. They’re not paralyzing wolves anymore. They’re killin’ them.” His arm tightened around my shoulders. “Yeah, it’s bad, Jules. We need some help up here. There are five survivors... I’ll call my dad and—oh, yeah, that’s right...” A long pause in his conversation then, “Yeah, that would help. I’ll send you a picture of the list of contacts Deck’s dad wrote down. And listen, there’s a set of twin females.” He looked at me. “Five years old?”

I nodded.

“With all that’s goin’ on, we’d rather their blood relatives didn’t come stormin’ in lookin’ to steal them away, so if you could pass that along.”

His dark eyes sparkled. Warmth like honey slid through my veins, filled me with pure joy and spread throughout my body. Strange and wonderful and not mine...until it was.

“Jules, I found her, mysakana.” His eyes curved into crescent moons at his enormous smile. “Desarae... Yeah, the same...How did you...You did?” His lips touched my forehead. “Thanks, Jules. And thanks for calling in the troops for us here. Not something any of us were looking forward to.” Another pause. “Yeah, we’re all safe here...love you, too.” He tapped out on the call.

The love and joy he felt made me giddy. Then, his smile faded, and the reason we were standing out on the side of the road slammed back in, along with all the sadness that accompanied it.

“You know Juliana?” Seff asked.

“Juliana Havarr?”

Seff nodded.

“Yes. She’s Jessy’s best friend.”

“She’s not Havarr anymore. She’s a Campion now. My Uncle Sorin’s mate. Hissakana. His Alpha female.”

“That’s so wonderful!”

Jules was a petite brunette who’d looked like a mini adult woman by the time she was thirteen, complete with D-cup breasts, an hourglass figure, and bright enough she’d tutored Jessy and me in our lessons.

“I haven’t seen her since Jessy’s wedding. We used to get into so much trouble together when we were younger.”

“I wish I’d been around to see that.” He grinned but it faded a second later. “She’s gonna make all the calls and gather up others to get out here as fast as they can.”

All the happiness I’d felt for Jules left me in a grateful breath. “Thank you.”

He flattened the list of names on the truck. “I’m gonna send this to Jules.” Then he took a picture with his phone and made quick work of sending it off.

“You hungry? I’m starvin’.” Seff draped his arm around my shoulders. “Is there someplace in town where we can get some breakfast, or does everything shut down around here?”

I laughed. “You’re in Montana now, Seff. It’s snow, not a national disaster. Believe me, you won’t find one store or restaurant closed because of a little winter white stuff.” Snuggling into Seff’s chest, I glanced out to the east to see the horizon announcing the coming sunrise with a peachy-lavender display. “And yeah. I could eat something, too. I’ll let you tell the twins.”

“Nereida was kinda worried you might be angry that she cut her hair.”

I shook my head. “No, never angry. A little shocked.”

“Yeah, that’s what I told her.” His arm tightened into a hug. “She told me they don’t come into town very often.”

“It’s a hard life growing up the only children in the pack. Decker and I grew up that way, but our parents brought us into town all the time, let us play with other kids, and took us on lots of vacations. Vera was so paranoid...” I stopped, not wanting to explain why Jack and Vera had given up their only offspring, yet.

Seff lifted my chin. His dark eyes were full of something I had never seen before. “If we have any say, no one’s gonna take them from us. I’ll protect them like they’re my own.”
