I had been so...weak.

It wasn’t me. It was never my fault.

He never loved me. He never cared about me.

He only desired power over me.

“Desarae. Look at me.” Seff’s voice was harsh and demanding and in complete contrast to how tenderly he touched me.

Opening my eyes, I knew what Seff had seen, what he’d sensed, might’ve felt all the way to his bones.

Weakness.

His eyes went nearly black. He ground his teeth as his face tightened.

“Des, darlin’, I wanna make love to you.” He sighed and shook his head, his long shaggy hair swinging back and forth. “But more than that, I need to get inside you. I need to taste you, bite you, and fill you until my scent leaks through your pores. I want every fucking male who gets near you to know who shares your bed—your life. What I reallydon’twanna do is have a damn hard conversation. Not right now, not when we—”

“You were never supposed to see that part of me.” I tried to put space between us, but Seff held me tight.

“What part of you?”

“The weakness...in me.”

He shook his head. “Weakness?”

Again, I attempted to pull away, but he wouldn’t have it. Without saying another word, he wrapped his arms around me. I could’ve broken his hold if I’d really wanted to. Safe in his arms was where I wanted to be, where I needed to be.

“This isn’t what we’re supposed to be doing.” Laying my hands on his hard chest, I felt his heartbeat, strong and sure. “I’ve already wasted hours in silence, holding everything in. I was afraid, so afraid...”

“Everybody has limits, Des. You’d lost almost every member of your pack. You weren’t even sure your parents were safe.”

Hot tears stung my eyes, but I sighed and nodded.

“And then, I showed up, makin’ all kinds of promises.”

Tears dripped down my cheeks as I pulled a funny face. “I will hold you to every one of those promises, champ.”

He grinned and winked. “You betcha.”

“Seff.” My voice trembled in a strange mixture of excitement, fear, and determination. “I’ve wasted too much time crying. I never want to look back and remember we could’ve been making love. I already have those moments from the last two nights. Those memories and the memories of my past are the kinds of things that creep in and destroy every wonderful moment we shared together.” He released me when I pulled away. Taking his big rough hands in mine, I looked into his eyes and made a vow. “I promise to have all those hard conversations with you, but right now, making love to you is more important than anything.” I looked him in the eye and asked, “Don’t you agree?”

His dark eyes twinkled. “You better believe it.”

He gave my fingers a quick squeeze, then shrugged out of his jacket, pulled his thermal up over his head. Deeply tanned skin covered his broad, muscular shoulders and torso. His long arms wrapped around me and pulled me in close.

“We’ve got time to do this slow and easy.”

“No, we really don’t.”

He kissed me, and suddenly it didn’t matter how much time we had. Nothing mattered except his lips on mine, his breath in my lungs, his taste on my tongue.

My entire body lit up. I burned all over in the best possible ways. Still, Seff did nothing more than kiss me, pouring his full attention into each touch of his lips and teasing tongue. One hand slipped into my hair. The other hand cupped my bottom, bringing me tighter into his big body.

“Seff, please...”

“Your mouth is so damn soft and perfect and just so fucking luscious,” he whispered into my mouth. “I wanna kiss you for hours.”

My blood seemed to pool in all my most sensitive areas, making them throb in time with my wildly pounding heart. I’d never felt such need. Or so lost to desire and passion.
