“I am now.”
He pulled my legs out from behind him and stood. After he scooped up our food wrappings, he shoved them into the paper bag and tossed them in a nearby trash bin. I sat up and pulled the sides of my jacket together to block the wind.
“C’mon.” Seff held out his hand. I took it. “It’s fucking freezing out here.”
“Where are we going?”
A wide smile turned his dark, smoldering eyes into those sweet little crescent moons.
“Let’s go steam up some windows.”
I arched a brow and grinned. “Race you.”
“Oh, yeah.”
Before we took a step toward the SUV, a low, mournful howl sounded off to the northeast—a howl full of pain and misery.
I caused that suffering.
The part of me that was all wolf shoved away the human guilt.
I did what I needed to do.
I turned to Seff. The playfulness coming through oursakanabond had disappeared. He stood with his eyes focused on the direction the howl had originated.
“Can you smell them?”
He nodded slowly. “Only one.”
CHAPTER THIRTY
Seff had the car startedand was ready to go when Brutus and the others raced out of the tree line. Carmine had pulled her jacket and jeans on, carrying her sweater and boots. The males were naked, running barefoot over the snow-covered parking lot with bundled clothing and boots tucked under their arms.
A second lone howl sounded in the darkness, the song so desperate and hollow it made my breath catch.
Seff leaned over the console and cupped my jaw. “Don’t. Don’t waste one second feeling guilty about that bastard’s pain.”
I nodded as Carmine came up to the SUV.
“Carmine, you know where we need to go?” Seff jumped out of the driver’s seat and quickly stripped out of his own clothing. “You know how to drive in the snow?”
“Yes, to both.” She yanked off her jacket and pulled her sweater over her head before sliding behind the wheel.
Brutus, Decker, and Sorrel had tossed their clothing and boots to the back of the car. Once they climbed inside, each male took on his wolf form, with Brutus taking up a good portion of the space in his massive Breeder size.
