“Probably because the mayor’s an attorney,” I explained, no longer feeling as proud of myself as I had a minute ago.

I picked up my napkin from my lap and set it on my plate, and then I looked around for our server. My parents had picked a chain bar and grill. More and more people were starting to come through the door, and soon, the place was going to be full. We were off in one corner of the restaurant, and it had been peaceful since we’d arrived early, but it wouldn’t be for long. I was ready to call it a night.

While I hoped our server would be the next person to come around the corner, I watched the door to the restaurant open, and then Dominick walked in.

I looked to my parents and back to Dominick. I didn’t know what to do.Should I introduce him? What would my parents think? They’ve probably never pictured me with a guy covered in tattoos. Would it cause a problem between us?Or maybe it didn’t matter because Dominick would just be introduced as a friend. They would probably still disapprove, but they wouldn’t be worried about me dating him. Which, technically, I wasn’t anyway, but they definitely wouldn’t approve of me sleeping with someone outside of a relationship.

As I contemplated what to do, I had to blink a couple of times to see if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but they weren’t.

Gina had just walked in behind Dominick. She said something, and they both cracked up as they approached the hostess stand. And while he didn’t have his arm around her, they were standing very close.

White-hot jealousy coursed through me along with a sinking feeling in my abdomen. It was fortunate I had finished eating because I lost my appetite, and what food I had consumed felt like rocks in my stomach now.

“Vivian.Vivian.”

I turned back to my parents and saw a look of concern on my mom’s face.

“Honey, are you okay?”

No. Everything was wrong. I hadn’t realized how much I’d wanted to introduce him to my parents until I found out I couldn’t.

I grabbed my purse. “Actually, I really don’t feel well.” I pulled out my wallet and put some cash on the table. “Is it okay if I head out without you?”

My dad picked up the money and handed it back to me. “Your mother and I are paying for this. You just go.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” they both said.

I wasn’t in the mood to argue about who was going to pay tonight.

Without putting the cash back in my wallet, I shoved everything back in my purse. “Thank you.”

“Wow. She really doesn’t feel good if she’s not going to fight us about paying,” Mom said.

I had to smile at this, but it was short-lived as I waited for Dominick and Gina to be seated soon. I just hoped it wouldn’t be in our section.

Panic came over me as I realized that I would have no idea what to say if I came face-to-face with the two of them together. Acting normal would be my goal, but I didn’t know if I could manage that when I felt like I was going to throw up.

Thankfully, the hostess went a different way, and the two of them disappeared from my sight. And that was my cue to leave.

“Thanks, Mom. Thanks, Dad.”

“You’re welcome, honey,” my mom said while I walked away.

I felt rude for not hugging her good-bye, but I needed to get out of the building. I rushed out as fast as I could without running because that would only draw more attention to myself, but I didn’t watch where I was going, and I ran into someone on my way out.

“Oof.”

I looked up to see a big guy with a blond buzz cut. For some reason, he looked vaguely familiar, but I didn’t have time to think about that.

“Sorry,” I muttered and hurried away.

It wasn’t until I was in my car with the door closed that I felt like I could breathe normally.

After a couple of deep breaths, I started my vehicle and headed home.

Seeing Dominick had been a wake-up call for me. The whole reason I had wanted a D appointment was because I didn’t want to be in a relationship. And here I was, getting jealous over the guy I was having sex with.
