Gina sat up. “He’s pretty good at it too.”

“I’m good at a lot of things,” Tony said to her.

I made a gagging sound.

I couldn’t believe that these two hadn’t even known each other until I introduced them. When Tony had told me he was taking Gina on a date, I had secretly laughed. Now, they were together all the time.

Tony whipped his head around. “No one invited you, dude,” he joked. And because he knew me so well, he asked, “Bad day?”

I ran my hand over my hair. “Yeah. Family services came and didn’t do jack shit.”

“I’m sorry, Dom,” Gina said. “I had such high hopes…”

I frowned. “What are you talking about? You didn’t know they were showing up at my mom’s today.”

She looked away. “I just meant that I had high hopes you’d be able to get your brother soon.”

It almost felt like she was lying, but I didn’t know about what. Gina had been very supportive of me getting custody of Spencer and never seemed to fake her concern. But I was probably just hyperaware of any little nuance.

“Yeah, man, sorry to hear that,” Tony said.

I sighed, rested my head back on the chair, and closed my eyes. “Just a couple more years, and he’ll be eighteen, and then I won’t have to deal with this shit anymore.”

After a minute, when neither of them had responded, I opened my eyes and looked over at them. They were looking at each other like they were ridiculously in love.

This was the whole reason I wished I had skipped the concert. I had felt like the third wheel all night. And I had missed out on getting naked with Vivian.

“How’s work going?” I asked.

Tony looked at me like I was nuts. “Same shit, different day.”

“Not you. Gina.”

“Fine,” she said with a shrug. “I sure wish you were still screwing Vivian though.”

“Oh?” I said casually. And I’d thought I was going to have to pry information out of Gina.

“Yeah, she’s passed Suzie Stern and gone to Betty Bitch. No one wants to be around her.”

I was sure Gina had to be exaggerating, but I didn’t interrupt.

“She bit my head off the other day, and then she had the nerve to ask me to hook her up with someone. Or rather, shealmostasked me to hook her up with someone. She only hinted, and once I brought up your name, she told me she changed her mind and rushed out of there.” Gina shook her head. “She needs to get her shit together.”

I was leaning forward, arms on my legs by this point. “What do you mean, she asked you to hook her up with someone?” I needed Gina to repeat what she had told me.

“She said something like she really needed a D appointment. I knew you two had taken a break, so I offered to text you, but she booked it back to her office. It wasn’t until she left that I wondered if she wanted to hook up with a different guy.” Her nose wrinkled. “Did something bad happen between the two of you?”

I was at the door before Gina finished her sentence because I was going to find out why the fuck Vivian had lied to me.

Vivian

I rubbedmy neck as I walked down the hall to my apartment, trying to relieve the stress that had built up there.

Things were so bad that, yesterday, I had almost asked Gina if she could hook me up with another one of her friends.

That was how desperate I was.
