Epilogue

Harper

Nathan has been actinga little strange tonight. I don’t know if it is the heat of the day or the number of times we’ve had sex, but I don’t know what it is, and it is driving me crazy. He’s gone all out for my birthday today, and I love him for it, I just wish I could put my finger on what exactly was going on in his head.

“Walk with me?” he asks once our dinner is cleared away.

“Of course,” I say, taking his hand. He links our fingers and leads me down the beach. The water lapping just a few feet from where we walk. We’re already on a secluded beach, so it isn’t like we’re trying to get away from many people. We come to a stop at a little bungalow. I notice the ice bucket standing in the center, with a bottle of champagne sticking out the top.

He stops at the bucket, pulling the bottle from the ice, and pops the cork. It fizzes over the top of the bottle, spilling some on the sand at our feet.

“Want some help?” I ask, grabbing the two glasses and holding them out for him to pour the liquid into.

He takes one once both are filled, and he’s returned the bottle to the ice. “Turn and watch,” he says. I do as instructed and turn just as the first burst of color fills the sky.

We watch for the next ten minutes as a spectacular firework show goes off. I’ll have to say, this is absolutely the most elaborate birthday I’ve ever had.

“That was amazing,” I say, turning to face him. The gasp that leaves my lips could probably be heard back at the main building. When I turn, I don’t find Nathan standing behind me, I find him kneeling with a ring box open and the biggest smile on his face that I’ve ever seen. “Yes!” I scream before he can even say anything. “The answer is yes,” I cry, covering my mouth as the tears start to stream down my face.

“Harper.” He calmly says my name, grabbing at my hand with his free one. I do my best to give him my full attention, even if I do have tears streaming down my cheeks. “Baby, don’t cry.”

“They’re good tears, I promise,” I tell him.

“Harper, I walked away ten years ago, not having the nerve to ask you our or thinking that I’d never be good enough for you. Thinking I’d never be able to give you the life you deserved. I let ten years slip by without you in my life, and those are ten years I can never get back. That day I walked back into your life is one of the best days in my life. I know this has been a whirlwind relationship, but I’m not willing to let another ten years pass me by without you in them. Harper Taylor, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

“Yes!” I scream, and this time he wraps his arms around me, picking me up and swinging me around.

“I love you, future Mrs. Bailey.”

“I love you, Mr. Bailey.”
