“You’re almost as bad as they are. How did I never catch on that you’re still a little boy at heart?”

“They’re just that infectious, but the reaction I’m most looking forward to is yours,” I tell her, dropping a kiss to her lips.

“Why mine?” she asks, a little confused.

“Because I am,” I tell her as I reach behind her and snag the gift I hid in the branches while she was tucking the kids in. “Lacey, a chance appointment put us in each other’s paths earlier this year, but what has transpired since then has changed my life forever. You and the kids have barreled your way into my heart and soul and imbedded in there for good. I can’t imagine my life without the three of you,” I tell her before I drop to one knee, right here in front of the Christmas tree, in the middle of her living room. “Will you make me the happiest man and marry me?” I ask as tears stream down her face.

“Yes.” She nods her head frantically as she pulls my face to hers to kiss. I wrap my arms around her torso, picking her up and kissing her back. Once we break apart, I take the ring from the box and slip it on her finger. “It’s so pretty,” she gasps once the ring is in place.

“Not as pretty as you are, but it’s a close second,” I tell her.

“I love you so much. Thank you for being my knight in shining armor and showing me how to love again.”

“No thanks necessary. It is my honor to get to love not only you, but the kids, as well,” I tell her, and that’s what I get to do for the next sixty-plus years.
