Jack laughs, stepping closer, his arms out as if to sayisn’t it obvious.“Yes, Jack, you were right, we were wrong, obviously.”

“Oh my god,” Penny says. “We are seriously never hearing the end of this, are we?”

Jack lifts a brow, a smug look on his face as he says, “Nope, probably not. I mean wait till Lu hears about it, which won’t be long by the way, given Oscar and Ollie came tearing out of here screaming it for the world to hear.”

I shake my head, even as Jack continues to laugh at us.

“Well whatever, we aren’t exactly trying to hide it,” Penny says, just as Oscar strolls back into the shed, holds up what looks to be a camera and wordlessly snaps a picture of us.

Jack bursts out laughing as the polaroid slides out of the camera and Oscar pinches it between his fingers, shaking it a little as he turns to Jack. “Got them!” he says proudly, throwing his arm in the air.

“Nice work, bud,” Jack says, ruffling his hair. “Although it’s not exactly a compromising position,” he adds.

“What’s compromising?” Oscar asks as I blurt out, “What the fuck?”

“Tommy,” Pen warns, smacking my chest as her eyes flick to Oscar. I glance over at him, rocking on his heels now, a cheeky smile on his face at having heard me drop an f-bomb.

Smiling, Jack waves a hand around. “We had a pool going on all of this,” he says matter of factly. “Lu had you down for a couple of weeks ago when we busted you on that date you weren’t on,” he adds, air quoting the last part. “I said before that when I worked out you’d gotten laid,” he says, gesturing to me. “While Ellen thought around now and Will had you for opening night at the cider house.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Penny says, shaking her head. “You guys seriously need to get a life.”

“Yeah, and we need to get on with making our mead, so if you don’t mind…” I point toward the door, signaling that Jack and Oscar can go.

“You weren’t making mead,” Oscar shouts. “You were kissing and being gross and stuff.”

“It’s code, Oscar,” Jack says, steering him out the door. “Don’t worry, one day you’ll understand.” He gives us a wink before he and Oscar walk back outside, finally leaving us alone.

As soon as they’ve left, Pen turns in my arms, a smile on her face as she looks up at me. “So,” she says.

“So,” I repeat back.

“Guess we really are doing this then, huh?”

I smile, leaning down to brush my lips against hers. “Guess we really are.”

She laughs a little, smacking my ass as she says, “Okay then.”

We spend the next couple of hours putting our limited google and YouTube knowledge to use as we attempt to turn our honey into mead. It’s relaxed and fun, probably more so given everything that’s now happened between us.

Despite my earlier reservations about starting a relationship with Pen, everything just feels so easy and right. Our conversations come naturally, only now they’re peppered with flirty comments like our online chats were and lots of make out sessions.

No one comes in to bother us either, making me wonder if anyone besides Jack was in earshot when Oscar and Olivia blew our cover.

At this point, I honestly don’t even care. I mean, I know we’re going to get shit about it, and we will literally never hear the end of Jack’s bragging about getting us together, but with the way I’m feeling right now, none of that shit bothers me.

“So, what now?” Penny asks as we pour the rest of our mead concoction into the waiting vats.

I shrug. “We let it sit for a bit, right?”

Pen returns the shrug. “Guess so. God, we’re totally winging this, aren’t we?”

I chuckle. “We are, but fuck it, it’s been fun.”

Pen smiles at me as she walks over, slipping her arms around my waist. “It has been.”

I lean down to kiss her. “Speaking of fun, you wanna come over again tonight?”

“I do,” she whispers against my mouth. “But I have to go home and feed my cat. Plus, I need some clean clothes.”
