“Minus the whole getting busted making out thing though, huh?” he prompts, tucking my hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing my cheek in a way that makes me take in a hard breath.

“Nah, that part was kinda fun, don’t you think?”

“It was.”

We spend the rest of the night listening to the band and enjoying each other’s company, keeping our hands mostly to ourselves, and when the night ends, Dylan is a perfect gentleman.

“I had a great time tonight, Tessa,” he says as he walks me up to my apartment. “I’d love to do it again.”

“Me too,” I reply, fighting back the urge to ask him when he’d like to do this again. Is he serious or is this like all the other times when he told me he’d call, but didn’t? Or will we just fall back into our old habits, and he’ll text me at midnight?

“See you tomorrow at work?” he now asks, rocking on his heels a little as if he doesn’t know if he should kiss me good night.

“I want to invite you in,” I admit, giggling a little at the awkwardness that’s passing between us.

“And as much as I want to say yes, I won’t. We are doing this the right way and if I come in, it’s going to go all sorts of wrong.”

His words make me laugh out loud and he pulls me in kissing me hard, my lips smiling against his.

“What if wrong sounds like exactly what I want?” I question, knowing I’d be down for him ending up in my bed.

“But is it really? You want a relationship and we’re getting there, so until then, I’m staying out of your bed.”

“Do you want a relationship?” I ask, a seriousness falling over our once humorous conversation.

He furrows his brow, looking at me for a second before answering. “That’s exactly what I want, Tess. I’m sorry that you’re still doubting me, but yes, I want you in my life and not just in my bed.”

“Okay,” I reply quietly, realizing I need to stop questioning his motives at this point. He’s been totally honest with me and has yet to give me a reason to not believe him. I hate that I’m the kind of person who continually looks back and focuses on what happened in the past.

But starting today, I’m done with that.

Dylan put his fingers under my chin, leveling my face with his. “Good night, Tessa,” he murmurs, his lips grazing mine, making me smile once again.

“Good night, Dylan.”

I close the door behind me, letting out a long, hard breath. It’s a real struggle to keep from falling back into our old habits, but he’s making me enjoy this getting to know you thing.

Just as I’m walking toward my bedroom, my phone chimes out with a text from Dylan.

Dylan: Would you like to have lunch with me tomorrow?

Me: At work? You ready for Jack to be all over us?

Dylan: I can handle Jack.

Me: People will talk.

Dylan: Let them talk. The good news is, all the guys will know you’re taken and I won’t have to worry about them flirting with you.

Me: No one was flirting with me except you.

Dylan: Trust me, they would’ve tried.

Me: Good thing you staked your claim early. I hear Somerville’s has a reputation for setting people up.

Dylan: It does. I’ve seen it at work. Penny and Tommy were brutal to be around. Making out everywhere. Wait…

Me: LOL. Looks like we’re turning into those people. Yikes!
