“Excuse me.” Cora said as I hung the phone up again. “You can’t just dictate where I work like that. I accepted a job at Halo, not here.”

“It’s irrelevant Cora, I own every company in this building.”

She bristled and rolled her eyes, “You’reirrelevant. I still said no. I don’t want to work up here with you and little red riding bitch. I like it downstairs.”

“Red riding bitch?” I asked with a raised eyebrow as her challenging nature lit my alpha on fire, I had always loved her feisty side when she graced me with it.

Reid sat down and tried to hide his smirk but failed and ended up laughing out loud. “Veronica could breathe fire hot enough to burn the devil. That’s a pretty accurate description actually.”

“Shut up Reid, don’t you have some money to manage for me or something?” I snapped.

He laughed again and stood up. He bowed to Cora and winked at her. “I’ll meet you in the lobby at five for our date Ms. Valentine.”

He turned on his heel and walked out the door heading down the hallway to his office before she could respond but it didn’t matter.

She wasn’t going.

“I don’t want to work for you.” She snapped at me as soon as the door was closed behind him, locking us in the glass fishbowl together.

“Why?” I put my hands on my hips and faced her head on.

“Because I don’t want to be near you.”

That hurt and I lashed back crudely. “As if I want to be near you? Please. I simply want to take a valuable employee and use you where you’re most effective. And you aren’t most effective to me as a personal assistant in some tech firm.”

“I’m aware your only interest in me is to use me Mr. Jones.” She snapped and stood up, “That’s all you’ve ever been good at where I’m concerned. And I’m not interested. Fire me if you want, but I’m not working up here.”

“Fire you?” I placed my fists on the glass table and leaned forward towards her and loved the way her pupils dilated, and her nostrils flared as I got close to her. “I’m trying to better your life for you since you’ve clearly done a shit ass job of making anything of yourself on your own. Take the opportunity. Working up here at my side would not only help you financially, but it would also no doubt make your father happier knowing you’re actually doing something worth being proud of.”

I let my anger get the best of me, but I forgot how her own anger rivaled mine and I never saw her tiny hand move until it cracked the side of my face. She slapped like a girl, but it still burned my cheek. Her face was as red as her palm was and her chest heaved as she took a deep breath to calm herself down.

“You do not know me, nor do you own me Maverick. Don’t forget that.” She grabbed her things hastily and turned to walk out of the room. She paused at the door and looked over her shoulder at me. “Consider this my formal resignation. Effective immediately.”

She walked out the door as I stood there, shocked and pissed the fuck off with my mouth hanging open.

It took a me a few seconds, but my feet started moving before my brain did. I was out the door and following after her before she was even halfway down the hallway. I saw the moment she heard my steps behind her because her own sped up, but I caught her at the main lobby by the elevators.

Veronica stood up at her desk when she saw me and started talking, but I held my hand up silencing her. The elevator doors opened, and Sebastian walked out with his assistant, ready to sign Cora on as my new employee. He looked from her to me as I caught up with her, “Should I come back?” He asked.

“Yes.” I snapped.

“No.” Cora said a moment later. “I’m not interested in working for Mr. Jones in any facility.”

“Shut up Cora.” I barked and grabbed her arm, dragging her away from the elevator. “You see nothing Sebastian. Go the fuck back to your office until I call for you again.”

Manhandling an employee in front of my head of Human Resources was probably not my wisest move but I was never levelheaded around her before, and it seemed that only got worse over the years.

“Get off of me Maverick!” She snapped, but I ignored her and dragged her into my office past a glaring Veronica.

When I slammed the door shut behind us I pushed her against it and crashed my mouth down on hers, silencing her demands.

She stilled instantly underneath of me as my lips desperately tried to coax hers open, but only for a moment, because a second later her lips went soft under mine and moved with them in time. I had meant only to silence her, but now that I was tasting her for the first time in ten years, I couldn’t force myself to stop. I put one hand on the side of her face, and she leaned into it, and I tilted her face how I wanted it and deepened the kiss.

I ran my tongue against her lips, and she moaned and opened to me and the second my tongue touched hers, I felt like I was home for the first time in a decade.

My other hand dropped to her hip and pulled her against my body as I pushed her back into the door harder. I groaned and pulled my lips from hers and kissed her ear and neck, licking and biting my way down her throat and back up.

“Wait.” She panted.
