Veronica was waiting for me at her desk when I walked past.

“Good morning Mr. Jones.” She said holding a coffee and a stack of papers.

“Thank you,” I took the coffee from her hands and walked into my office setting my bag down on the desk and turning towards her. “What are those?”

She looked at the papers and then handed them too me. “Messages sir, from your mother.”

Shit. She had called a few times last night, but I didn’t answer them because I was busy emptying myself inside all three of Cora’s holes all night, and I hadn’t had a chance to call her yet this morning. “Thank you Veronica.” I took the stack and looked through them quickly, they all said the same things.

Call me.

Do not ignore me young man.

Your father told me about Cora. Call me!

I chuckled and threw them on my desk. “Anything else?” I asked my assistant as she stood a few feet away staring at me.

She hesitated but then shook her head.

“Good. I have a lunch date from twelve to one, so block my schedule and get me the menu to that Chinese restaurant you order from for me, please.” I turned and sat down in my chair.

“I can take care of your order Mr. Jones. I know what you like.” She said and the tone in which she said it caught my attention. I looked up at her and she stepped forward, getting closer to me and I watched as she ran her fingers across the button of her shirt that was struggling to contain her tits, looking like it was going to pop off at any moment.

I looked back up to her eyes and she smiled at me, almost like she was pleased I looked at her chest.

I scowled and looked away from her completely. “I’m not ordering just for myself Veronica. Ms. Valentine will be joining me. So just get me the menu and I will pick out what we want to eat.”

She dropped her hands to her side and her spine stiffened in my peripheral vision as I woke up my computer. “If you insist sir.” She said and then turned and walked out of my office.

I pressed the button under my desk and closed the doors to my office and then mirrored the glass as I dialed my mother’s number.

It rang only one time before she answered, sounding breathless and agitated.

“Maverick.” She said. Her voice was smooth like honey, but it was laced with hurt.

“Mom. I’m sorry I missed your dozens of calls in the last twelve hours.”

She tsked her tongue and I imagined her shaking her head at me in exasperation. “Tell me everything.” She said simply.

“What did dad tell you?”

“I don’t trust what he told me, he has no flare for romantic notions, and you know it. I want to hear it from you Mav.”

I smiled at her dramatics and settled into my chair. To be honest, she had loved Cora like she was her very own daughter when we were kids, and she was devastated when our relationship had ended as well. I just didn’t know what she would think about this new information because we had refused to speak of Cora over the last five or six years as the time and hurt had spread on and on.

“She started working here at Hawthorn Tower on Monday, and I ran into her then.” I said easily.

“Was she really cut off? Because of you?” She asked and I could hear her sadness through the phone.

“Yes.” I sighed, feeling guilt fresh in my veins. “They pushed her out their front door that same night when she refused to beg me to take her back.”

“My God Maverick. What did she do? Where did she go? Why didn’t she at least reach out to your father or I for help? We would have taken care of her!”

She was getting worked up and I sighed, hating telling her all of this over the phone. “She was devastated by what I did Mom. She was a kid and wasn’t thinking straight and by time she realized how bad the situation was, she was convinced she couldn’t come home at all, to me or you guys. She instead, fought through homelessness, hunger, and God knows what else and clawed her way out of the streets and into the middle class.”

“And now?”

“And now,” I paused, considering how to lay this all out to my sensitive mother. “And now I’m trying to convince her to move in with me and then I’m going to try to convince her to marry me and then I’m going to try to convince her to spend the rest of her life as my wife and the mother to my children.”
