“No. I have a much bigger plan in place for that. So I need to calm down before he comes in and somehow pretend I don’t want to tear him to pieces.”

“Okay, so keep the meeting short and I’ll do most of the talking. Got it.” Reid said, standing up and walking over to the bar, pouring bourbon in a glass, and handing it to me. I eyed him and he just nodded to it. “Believe me Maverick, you fucking need it. You look like the hulk right now.”

I took the glass and poured the drink back, swallowing it in one gulp and then hit the intercom button, “Send him in.”

“Yes sir.” Veronica answered and a moment later Jake Valentine strolled into my office with his hand in his pants pocket and a smug smile on his face.

I was going to enjoy ruining his fucking life.

Chapter 10 – Cora

I watched the clock obsessively and waited to hear from Mav that Jake was gone and out of the building. The longer that passed, the more worried I got.

Mr. Peterson popped his head out of his office, “Cora, can you go and grab the new campaign legalities from Dexter Chase up at Jones?”

“Uh…” I started, looking wide eyed up at my boss trying to figure out what to do.

“Is there a problem?” He said as he took his glasses off the ledge of his nose and looked at me.

“No.” I said quickly, and stood up, “I was just trying to remember which one was Dexter, but I got it. Sorry.” I said and smiled.

“Perfect, thank you.”

I nodded and turned away and walked towards the elevators, racking my brain to come up with a plan.

I took my phone out of my pocket and quickly texted Mav.

Me: I have to come up to Dexter’s office.

I got to the elevators and dragged my feet, silently praying for Mav to text me back. I couldn’t get to Dexter’s office without passing by Mav’s and even if his walls were mirrored, my brother could look out of his office and see me pass by.

“What’s up Cora?” Nat asked as she got back to her desk, eyeing me standing at the elevator bay hugging my phone.

“Nat!” I rushed over. “I need a favor!”

“Uh oh,” She eyed me suspiciously.

“I have to go get the new campaign legalities for Mr. Peterson from Dexter Chase’s office, but my brother is in Maverick’s office right now and he can’t know I work here yet.”

“How are you going to get past then?” She asked, tilting her head to the side.

“I was hoping maybe you would be the one to get past the office…”

“You want me to go up to Dexter’s office for you? Who’s going to man my desk?”

“Me. It will take all of five minutes max, I can handle it.”

“Are you sure? I don’t even know what the legalities are to know what to get from him.”

“Either do I!” I said hurriedly, “He will know. Just tell him it’s for Mr. Peterson and he’ll know, I hope.”

“Cora…” She said, with wide eyes of uncertainty.

“Please! I’ll buy your next two nights of drinking wherever we go! Please I’m desperate.”

She sighed and looked at her watch. “Okay, I don’t have any meetings coming up for another fifteen minutes or so, just answer the phone and take messages and I’ll return them as soon as I get back.”

“Oh my God, I owe you so much!” I gushed and pulled her in for a quick hug.
