“Oh my God.” I gasped, fighting to catch my breath as my orgasm faded and I came back down to earth. Mav chuckled behind me, leaning over, and pressing kisses against my neck and shoulders briefly before pulling out of me and pulling my dress back down to cover my bare ass, tucking himself back into his jeans. “Did you just fuck me on the hood of your car?” I asked, turning around, and leaning into his waiting arms.

“Like a crazed maniac.” He affirmed and chuckled into my hair as he pulled me over to my car door and helped me get back in before walking around to his side and climbing in. When the doors were shut, and we were encapsulated back into the safety of our car he turned to look at me with a pensive look on his face. “What was that about?” I looked down at my hands in my lap and took a deep breath, trying to decide what to say to him when he reached over and tilted my chin up with his finger, making me look into his eyes. “Talk to me darling. Please.” He pleaded, closing his eyes, and expressing his need.

My lips moved before I even figured out how I wanted to answer him because his need called to me, “You’ve been treating me like you did after the boathouse again.”

His brows dropped over his eyes as they flickered over my face confused. “We’ve had sex nonstop since that conversation.” He started, not understanding what I meant.

“And you haven’t so much as held me tightly any of those times though.”

His shoulders deflated and his fingers fell from my chin to weave through mine in my lap, but he didn’t respond.

“I don’t want you to lessen yourself for me.” I tried gently.

“I don’t want to be too much for you either.” He said instantly, with pain.

“Does it look like I can’t take it?” I implored, waving my hand towards the hood, and he glared at me in frustration, so I gentled my voice and leaned towards him. “I like that side of you Mav, I always have. And when you hold back from me, I feel like you’re hiding from me, and it leaves me feeling…” I scowled trying to figure out how to portray the feeling, “Empty. And alone.” Pain washed over his face as he watched me intently. “I’ve spent ten years feeling empty and alone without you Mav. Don’t make me feel that way when you’re buried inside of me too.” I begged.

“Cora.” He gasped, closing the distance, and crushing his lips against mine. The kiss was anything but gentle or pretty, it was carnal and animalistic as he let himself show me how he was feeling, and I felt the tendrils of familiarity in the kiss from years past. “I’m so sorry.”

I shook my head against his and kissed him again, “Don’t ever kiss me any other way than how you just did Mav. Never again.” I smiled and I felt the whisper of a sigh from his lips as he came to terms with the internal battles raging on inside of his head.

“I don’t want to mess this up again Angel.”

“I don’t want to live half of a life either Mav. We’ve already done that. I want you, desperately. I need you. Every single part of you, every single second. Please don’t hide from me.”

“Okay.” He said softly, breathing me in and nuzzling his nose into the skin behind my ear. “I love you Cora Lynn Valentine. I can’t wait to make you my wife and make up for all this lost time exactly how you deserve.”

“I love you Mav. You’re the only thing I’ve ever longed for without fail.” I kissed him again and held onto him until we couldn’t deny that we were officially late any longer. “We should go.” I sighed and leaned back into my seat as he reached around me and buckled my seat belt for me in a way that just screamed, Mav.

When he pulled back out onto the street and headed back towards our destination of Jones’ Mansion, there was a calmness and comfort in the air between us that had been missing the last few days.

“Are you excited?” He asked, pulling through the impressive new front gate at his parent’s estate as he held my hand in my lap.

I squeezed it and smiled at him as I bit my lip. “It feels like a mix of Christmas morning and going to a dentist appointment.” I answered truthfully as a laugh rolled out of his chest.

“Explain.” He implored.

“I’m so happy and excited to see them, I’ve missed them both so much. That’s the Christmas morning part." I said and took a deep calming breath as he put the car in park outside of the garage.

“And the dentist appointment part?” He turned in his seat towards me and gave me his full attention.

“Apprehension that I’m not enough anymore.” I answered honestly. “That too much has happened, and it will never be the same with them.”

He leaned forward and kissed my cheek, calming me with his touch. “There’s only one way to find out how it feels to be back in our family Cora.” He said and pulled back, pushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

“I know.” I turned and looked at the front door apprehensively before turning back to him. “Don’t leave me alone until I tell you that I’m okay?” I asked and his eyes softened even more at my request.

“Promise.” He agreed whole heartedly.

“Okay.” I said and nodded my head, watching as he climbed out of the car and walked around to my side, opening the door, and holding his hand out for me to take. We walked up the front steps and Mav opened the door, letting us in and I was catapulted back in time. Mav’s childhood home had always felt more comforting to me than my own and walking in the front door again after so many years, felt like coming home for the first time in a decade. “I love you.” I whispered to him as he squeezed my hand, watching my reactions and body language closely.

“Maverick?” His dad’s voice rang out from the den at the back of the house, “Is that you?”

“Yeah Dad, we’re here.” Mav called out and pulled me into his side as we walked into the heart of the home.

“My God.” Marsha gasped as she came running from the kitchen towards the den and saw us walking down the hallway. She covered her mouth and stared at us with love in her eyes as she embraced me, pulling me from Mav’s arms affectionately and hugging me tightly. She hadn’t aged a day in ten years and yet somehow managed to look more elegant and timeless with her dark brown hair and warm brown eyes that were watery when she finally pulled back and ran her hands down both of my arms. “Cora dear,” She said wistfully and shook her head. “We’ve missed you so much.”

“I missed you both terribly as well.” I said, as she pulled me into another hug. Christopher, Mav’s dad lingered back and let Marsha fawn over me for a moment before stepping forward and pulling his wife back to hug me himself.
