My lips parted as I clutched my wine glass. “Oh.”

My future husband smirked and winked at me. “Don’t worry about my desire to destroy your family Cora, we’re still going to make a pretty fucking penny off them to do it.”

“Interesting.” I mused and let that mull over in my head. “And you’re executing it tomorrow?”

Christopher nodded, “The sale should be completed by noon tomorrow.”

“And what do you expect Jake to do when he finds out about the loss of hundreds of millions in this deal?”

“I expect him to come to my office in a rage. So you’ll be tucked away safe all day at least.” He said so deadpanned as I scowled at him.

“You’re going to let him in the building, knowing he’s irate and unhinged?” I gasped.

“I want to see the look in his eyes as he realizes he’s fucked.”

“For your revenge?”

“For our revenge.” He said.

I didn’t reply, and I felt his parents eyes on us as I processed everything.

“He will be safe Cora.” Marsha said softly, knowing without me even replying what was bothering me about it all. I gave her a small smile and pushed my food around on my plate, suddenly not hungry as Maverick and Christopher went back to making plans.

We spent the rest of the day with his parents, and after a few more glasses of sangria, I was able to relax and not stress about the impending explosion of my brother’s brain in less than twenty-four hours.

By the time we left it was well into the evening and nearing dusk. Maverick held my hand in my lap as he drove us back through the city towards his penthouse, but there was an edge to the air in the car.

“Talk to me.” His voice rumbled across the space as I looked out the window. “Tell me what I did wrong.”

I smiled softly at his openness and squeezed his hand. “I just worry about you.”

“You think your brother is going to do something to harm me?” He scoffed.

I shrugged my shoulders, “My father has taught him everything he knows, and look what my father has done over the years to us.”

He contemplated that for a minute before pulling his car into the garage of his building and helping me out. When I stood up he pulled me into his arms and kissed me deeply, and when he pulled back I could see the softness in his eyes as he looked at me. “I’ll make sure I’m safe Cora.”

“How?”

“I’ll have security as well as Reid and Dexter in with me.”

“And me?” I asked.

His eyes crinkled in confusion, “What do you mean? You’ll be safe at Halo, just like the other day.”

“You think I’ll be able to do anything constructive knowing he’s in the building Mav?”

“What can I do to help you?” He asked genuinely, wanting to take the worry off my shoulders.

I leaned into his embrace further and looked him straight in the eye. “You can walk away from all of the elaborate plans and scheming to destroy them. Just… live in the here and now with me.”

“I can’t do that baby.” He said with sincerity as he shook his head. “That’s not how my brain works. I follow a code of honor Cora, and they’ve destroyed that.”

“So you’ll destroy them.”

“Yes.” He said instantly, and I knew he wasn’t moving on this topic.

I leaned up and kissed him, letting him deepen it as I clung to him before pulling back to look at him. “Then I guess distract me as best you can for the time being until this is all in the past.”
