Reid winked and then stepped back, letting go of my hand.

The cantankerous red head interrupted the relaxed atmosphere, “You can have a seat-“

Reid cut her off and led me to the side of the table. “We’ve got it taken care of Veronica.” But ignoring her was apparently a big no-no, because she huffed and left the room. Reid led me to a seat next to the head of the table and pulled a chair out for me before taking the one next to me. The other man took the seat across from me after leaning across the table to shake my hand.

“I’m Dexter Chase, Mr. Jones’ lawyer.” He was mid-thirties, maybe forties, and he was good looking in a boy next door kind of way, with blond hair, and blue eyes. His suit was immaculate and his smile carefree without the wolfish glare to it like Reid’s. He had a wedding ring on his hand, and I figured his easy-going nature probably came from wearing that.

“Mr. Chase, pleasure to meet you, I’m Cora Valentine.”

“What a beautiful name for an angelic woman.” Reid said from next to me. And I felt the blush cover my cheeks as I ducked my head, settling my things out on the table.

It only took two seconds to get arranged though and then I was stuck awkwardly sharing space with two incredibly good-looking men and having nothing of importance to say.

Dexter laid out his own file and tablet and leaned forward, “This meeting should only take a half an hour max. We started the process of obtaining Shen Hu’s firm a year ago now, this is the final meeting to sign the paperwork and do the actual exchange of property. They will have their own translator who will do most of the work, but we always make sure we have our own in house as well to keep from having any trickery going on. So if anything is said from their translator to or from their CEO that doesn’t match up, you tell us immediately.”

“Got it.” I answered easily.

“Good.” He said and picked his phone up to answer a message.

Reid leaned in and whispered to me, “So Ms. Valentine, how is your first day going?”

I took a deep breath, “I’ll let you know after this meeting.”

He laughed and laid his hand on my arm, “You could let me buy you dinner to celebrate the success we’ll be having after this meeting is over. That would be a good way to commemorate the occasion.”

I looked at him and pursed my lips, “It would be a good way to commemorate something, just not sure if I’d remember it fondly after it was all said and done or not.”

Dexter laughed out loud and smacked the table and Reid leaned back in his chair in mock offense, holding his hand to his chest. Before he could respond though the adjoining door opened from Mr. Jones’ office and Reid and Dexter both stood up, so I followed suit. I looked down at my dress and smoothed my hands over my skirt and took a deep breath before I looked up to meet the man who owned more than I’d even begin to understand.

But the man stood frozen in place at the end of the table with his eyes locked on me as shock outweighed the scowl on his face.

“Don’t even think about it Jones, she’s already going out with me tonight.” Reid said with a boisterous laugh and Dexter laughed too as they watched the awkward exchange between us.

But I couldn’t even breathe.

Because the enigma that ruled the multibillion-dollar company and thousands of people inside of this amazing skyscraper, was the boy that had destroyed me three days after high school graduation.

“Cora.” He whispered, grimacing at me as I fought to remain standing upright.

“Mav?”

Chapter 3 – Maverick

I walked through the doors to the conference room and saw Reid and Dexter laughing and charming my new translator. Typical. She must be hot for both of them to be paying her attention though, because their types were polar opposites usually. Maybe I’d steal her for myself and fuck her in my office after the meeting.

I could use a good ‘bend her over my desk’ kind of fuck. God knows it’s been a while since the last time I did that.

When I walked in they all stood up including the blonde. And even though she was looking down at her lap, my blood still roared in my veins from only a glimpse of her profile.

Cora.

Cold shivers raced over my body as she slowly raised her turquoise blue eyes up to meet mine and her perfect cupids bow lips parted as her smile fell from her face.

She was shocked speechless that I was here.

“Don’t even think about it Jones,” Reid said, laying his hand on the small of her back and laughing, “She’s already going out with me tonight.”

Dexter laughed too but I could hardly hear it.
