“No way. How did... You did this?”

“For you, baby. I wanted them to be here with you tonight.”

“How did you manage this? You don’t even know them.”

“I know everything.” He laughed as he guided her in the direction of her waiting grandparents, who couldn’t look any happier. “They’re awesome too.”

“Bella Sammy.” Her grandfather used his favorite term of endearment for her. “You sounded perfect tonight. You’ve been working hard, and it shows.”

She let go of Tyler’s hand when her grandfather pulled her into a big embrace.

“What are you doing here?” She let go of him so she could hug her grandmother. “I can’t believe it.”

“Your very handsome boyfriend made it impossible for us to say no,” her grandmother said as she hugged her. “Why didn’t you tell me how attractive he was?”

“I’m sure I mentioned it.” Her cheeks filled with heat when she thought about all the things her grandparents probably told Tyler.

“You said he was good-looking and you sent me one picture of the two of you.” Her grandmother stared at Tyler. “He’s much better looking in person.”

“Gran!”

“I’m glad you think so,” Tyler intervened as he draped his arm along Sammy’s back. “I’ve been having a wonderful time planning this surprise. Your grandparents are on speed dial on my office phone.”

“This one is very persuasive,” her grandfather said. “Your grandmother and I were discussing coming home to see you, and then two hours later Tyler called and asked us to come for your recital.”

“It was a sign,” her grandmother offered.

“I’m glad it worked out.” Tyler held Sammy close to his side.

“Tyler wanted it to be a surprise. He’s a romantic. He even insisted on putting us up in a beautiful hotel here in the city.” Her grandmother smiled. “I’ve never stayed in Manhattan before.”

“We could have gone to our home too,” her grandfather said.

“Nonsense.” Tyler scoffed. “I didn’t want you to go through the trouble of opening up your house for a few days. That would have been too much work. This is your mini-vacation.”

“We can’t thank you enough for bringing us here to see Sammy.” Her grandmother’s eyes teared up. “We miss her so much.”

“I miss you too, but Florida is the best place for you. No snow, no shoveling, and you live in a beautiful, new condo.”

“It’s not New York, and I miss the Yankees,” her grandfather complained, “but it’s good.” He looked at Tyler and asked, “Are you a Yankees fan?”

“Of course.” Tyler said. “We’ll have to go to a game next time you come home.”

“I like him.” Her grandfather winked at Sammy as he and her grandmother made their way to the exit. “He’s a keeper.”

“You certainly are.” Sammy and Tyler followed them out. “I can’t believe you did this for them.”

“For you,” he whispered before stealing a quick kiss. “I made dinner reservations at the top of the hotel they’re staying at. I have a car for us out front.”

“You thought of everything.” She pressed against his side. “Thank you. This is the best surprise ever.”

“Anything for you.” He kissed the top of her head. “Don’t you know that by now?”

She watched as her grandparents slipped into the sleek, black limo. Their expressions told her how excited they were. Never had they experienced this kind of style before. They’d lived in Brooklyn all of their lives, but hardly made it into Manhattan. They were simple people who enjoyed the easy life. They didn’t need lavish, but tonight was special. Tyler had made them happy. Before getting into the car, she reached up on her toes and planted a kiss on his lips.

“What was that for?”

“For being you.”
