“Jack?”Fuck!Julian glanced up to find his friend glaring at him. “Don’t lose your shit.” In less than twenty-four hours, he was meeting Jack to tell him about his relationship with Kayla. What were the chances he’d be having brunch at the same hotel they were? Talk about fate.

“Jack,” she said as she let go of Julian’s hand. “We wanted to tell you. Julian did, but I—”

“Tell me what?” Jack didn’t look at his sister, he was focused on Julian. “When I asked you to look after her this isn’t what I meant.”

“Sit down so we can discuss this.” Julian pulled out the chair next to him. “We don’t need to make a scene.”

“How long have we been friends?” Jack asked.

“Fifteen years,” he answered, but right now their history had nothing to do with the current situation.

“You were the best man at my wedding.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t have the decency to tell me you were fucking my sister?”

“Jack?” Kayla smacked the table with her palm. “It’s none of your business. Now stop acting like an ass and sit down.”

“Don’t disrespect her,” Julian warned. “I don’t care how many years we have behind us. I won’t allow you to speak that way in front of her.”

“Me? Disrespect her? That’s laughable, don’t you think?” Jack shook his head in disgust. “I don’t even want to think about the things I know about you and what you may have done with her.”

“I said it was none of your business.” She raised her voice. “You should go.”

“I’m not going anywhere without you,” Jack said before returning his attention to Julian. “Don’t you have any honor? Not only is she too young for you, but she’s my sister. What were you thinking?”

“Jack, I said—”

“Don’t,” Julian stopped her. “I can handle this.”

“That’s exactly what I’m talking about.” Jack pointed at him. “She’s not like the others that you find in that club of yours. You can’t treat her like a possession. She has no idea who you are.”

“I know exactly who he is,” she announced. “Where do you think I ran into him?”

“Kayla!” Julian stared into her eyes, trying to get her to back down. Don’t challenge me now. Turning back to Jack, he took a calming breath before continuing. “We’re not doing this here. Jack, I’m sorry we kept our relationship from you. It was a decision your sister made, and I respected it. I didn’t necessarily agree with it, but I understand why she did it. Whatever you think of me, I swear to you, she means more to me than I ever could have imagined. She’s not who I’m used to. She’s not those women I’ve taken to dinner with you and Caroline.”

She placed her hand on his thigh, gently squeezing it. Letting him know she was with him.

“You know me, Jack. I’m not the settling down type. I don’t do relationships.”

“You can say that in front of her?” Jack asked. “Have you no respect for her?”

“I can say these things because none of them are true anymore. Kayla has changed me.”

“Save it,” Jack said. “Kayla, let me take you home. We need to talk.”

“No.” She took Julian’s hand. “I love that you want to look out for me and protect me, but you don’t need to save me from whatever you think he’s doing to me. It was Julian who saved me from what I thought I was looking for when I went to his club.”

“Why would you go there?” Jack lowered his tone. “What were you thinking?”

“It doesn’t matter now.” She looked into Julian’s eyes. “I found what I needed.”

And that’s what I was trying to tell you. Damn it, Jack and his stupid timing.

“How long have you been lying to me?” Jack looked from his sister to Julian.

“It hasn’t been long,” Julian confirmed. “We wanted to be sure it would work out before we told you.”
