She recognised the finality in the words. He’d shifted into Xander Mac mode, the wicked smile and sensual touch of him disarming her. He didn’t want emotions. It was sexual oblivion he was after, and maybe it was enough for the moment. His hands cupped her breasts so they mirrored her palms on his chest.

His lips followed, seeking one nipple, his fingers on the other, kneading and stroking. She knew this game, bobbing down to lick the small brown nipple over his heart. Her thoughts blurred, focusing only on the sensation of his mouth and hands, her body singing to his tune. He lay over her, skin to skin, a tactile warmth wherever they touched, his hands bringing her closer to heaven with every flick and glide. His clean woodsy scent wound around her, his taste on her tongue sweet and salty.

When he entered, her she soared immediately, hardly aware of anything but two bodies so entwined they were one. She heard him cry out, a soft grunt as he found his pleasure with hers.

As they came down from the heights, he buried his face in her throat, his heaving chest flattening her breasts, the weight comforting in a way she could barely comprehend.

She was almost asleep when a low beep dragged her from oblivion. Her alarm.

Xander lifted his upper body from hers. “Sounds like the fun is over.”

“For now.”

He rolled over and gripping the base of the condom, slid from the bed, heading for the bathroom.

The next timeshe woke was to a soft rapping at the door. “Bonnie?”

Tamara poked her nose into the room.Damn.She’d forgotten to lock up again. Xander was still wrapped around her, where he’d fallen asleep in the early hours after using another of the condoms. He’d been gentle, careful not to tangle with her plugged-in insulin pump and tubing. It had been lovely. Not quite the conflagration of the first time, but satisfying.

Pushing her hair back from her face she eased away from Xander’s grip. “What’s wrong? You’re here early.”

“Xander was coming with me to the coast today. We were meant to leave at six.”

“The coast?” He hadn’t mentioned it. Which made her wonder why. Tamara was dressed for travelling in jeans and a jacket over whatever shirt she was wearing, her hair tied back with a scrunchie. A quick glance at the alarm clock on the bedside table showed 6:20. “He must have slept in.” He stirred beside her and her face heated at Tamara’s wide eyes.

Xander grinned as he emerged from the covers, all bare-chested deliciousness. “Sorry. Late night.”

Tamara’s face was as red as her own must be. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realise. I mean, I knew, but I didn’t expect…”

He took pity on her. “I’ll be down in ten. I’ll need to shower and dress. I’m all packed.”

“I’ll be in the car. I don’t want to leave Colin too long.” The girl scurried away, her booted feet silent on the carpet.

Xander stood up, stretching in a way that showed off the muscles in his shoulders. “Do you mind if I use your shower again? I’ll have to sneak around and get my clothes.”

“I’ll get them if you want.” She pulled on a robe over her pyjamas.

“My jeans and stuff are ready on the spare bed and my boots are under the bed.”

It only took a couple of minutes and he was already out of the shower when she returned, ready to climb into his clothes.

“How long will you be gone?”

“For the weekend. Back Monday evening. Flo said she had someone who could come in and help with the rooms.”

“Normally it would be Janine, but there are a couple of schoolgirls we use for wedding weekends who might be available.”

He hesitated at the door. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. It was only finalised late last night. Gran said she’d let you know this morning.”

She noticed he didn’t explain the rationale behind the trip. “It’s fine. Do you want me to get you something for breakfast?”

His eyes were shadowed, his brows drawn together. He took a few steps across the room to look down on her. “We’ll talk when I get back.” His kiss on her lips was light, but the words had a deeper meaning. She had a feeling it was crunch time. She needed to get her act together before he started talking happy-ever-afters again.

Bonnie watched Naomiinsert the new cannula into her belly, a handspan from her navel. It was her regular visit to the clinic and Naomi usually did the procedure since Bonnie’s recent return to the Crossing. “I have a question.”
