The energy pouring off the stage was taken by the audience and bounced back with wild applause and an obvious enjoyment. The auditorium buzzed with it and Bonnie understood why the fans flocked to the group’s concerts. Xander was mesmerising, taking the lead where appropriate but giving his band members their moments to shine as they worked their way through ten years of their musical catalogue. How could he possibly give this up?

They must have been close to the end of the concert when Xander hushed the crowd, Leo plucking an unfamiliar tune.

“You’ve been a great audience tonight, and we want to share a couple of new songs you won’t have heard before. This one is for my best girl, here in the Crossing.”

A hum of excitement was quickly silenced as his pure voice sent a long note winging across the auditorium.

“Ooooh. Say hello to the girl from yesterday…”

Bonnie froze as his eyes sought hers, the brilliant blue glowing in the spotlight.

“Say goodbye to the wasted years,

When I didn’t want to grow up,

Cos it might be too hard,

To face the reality of being in love.”

The chorus was simple and catchy and he soon had the crowd singing along.

“I’ve gotta grow up, if I wanna grow old,

Together with you.

I’m gonna grow up, cos I want to grow old,

Together with you.”

The crowd faded and it was only her and Xander, bound together in something true and real.

“Cos I didn’t see, she was the only, only girl for me…”

There was a silence before the crown reacted, standing and clapping, wolf whistles echoing around the auditorium.

Xander stood there, still with his eyes on Bonnie, taking the adulation. With a small smile, unlike his Xander Mac beam, he broke the connection to acknowledge the crowd and give a sweeping accolade to the band.

It was an amazing experience, to be in the midst of it all and knowing the words were meant for her. A love song and a promise.

Surely after the crowd settled down the rest would be an anticlimax.

Leo struck another chord and the audience responded immediately, taking their seats and reducing the sound level to a low murmur.

The band members began a soft hum with an old-fashioned bluegrass feel.

“This one is for you, Kurrajong Crossing. A little ‘Hometown Blues’.”

The stomping and clapping began again but softened as Xander began to sing.

“Because you’re still there,

And I’m so far away,

I miss all the things I never wanted,

Back when I was young.”

He sang about the mountains and the lake, and about the people who’d welcomed him into their lives.
