“Oh no, you’ll watch me gut her. Just to cause you more pain. I wish it was her we would have gotten. Look at her, she’s perfect, and you’re defective. Just the devil’s spawn.” The woman I called mom all my life yells as she advances toward Livi.

I reach down, grabbing the closest thing to me and swinging it straight at her face. I hit her hard in the side of the head with my guitar, destroying it beyond repair but saving my sister from the insane family I once called my own. She moves, getting up off the ground, her face covered in blood, but I pick up what’s left of my guitar and hit her again with it, knocking her out cold.

“Oh no, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean…” Livi apologizes, but I silence her by pulling her into a hug.

“She tried to kill you. No way in hell I was letting that happen,” I tell her. She pulls back and looks at me.

“Language,” she admonishes, and we both break down in laughter until Waylon and Joey rush into the room. They both pull us into a group hug before letting go. I pick my bag up off the bed, look at the broken shards of my most beloved possession, and walk out of the toxic house I never belonged in.

“I’m so sorry about your guitar, baby,” Joey says, walking with me to his truck.

“It’s okay. I lost what little good memories I had from a childhood that should have never existed, to begin with. Now, I get to make new memories with the people who actually want to love the real me,” I tell him, leaning up and offering my mouth to him. This new life is going to be badass, just like me. Yup, this is definitely where I belong.
