Crouching down, I dropped my weight and, like binoculars, focused on the crack in the wall beside the second-floor window.

I jumped, leaping off the ground with the agility of a vampire. My claws sank into the crack by the window, allowing me to dangle off the wall. I moved swiftly but quietly, opening the window and slipping in.

It took me five minutes to search the entire second floor because it was empty. There was nothing and no one. The walls were bare, the wallpaper in some rooms was peeling, and there was mold. I checked for explosives and traps, being careful where I stepped, but there were none.

Downstairs was the same except a little cleaner, and there was a bed, table, fridge, and chair in the living room. Again I checked for explosives and traps, and once clear, I opened the door for Killian and the others.

“He left,” I growled when Killian walked by me. “His scent inside is even fainter than it is outside, which is strange.”

“Yeah, I can tell,” Killian said while the other wolves spread out.

Killian opened the fridge and slammed it shut, but the smell had already escaped. I held my breath for a few seconds and cleared my throat.

"You don't want to see what's in there," Killian rubbed at his nose, and I dragged the flimsy mattress off the bed and turned the bed over.

When I found nothing, the unease I felt from outside tripled. "Something’s wrong here," I said more to myself than Killian. "If Isaac's untamed, this is like no untamed nest I've ever seen. What's inside the fridge?"

“Old blood bags, rats, maggot," Killian answered, and I shook my head.

“There are no bodies, no blood stains, no drugs, nothing,” I said. “This place is spotless compared to an untamed vampire's normal state of living. The fridge fits the bill, but even if Isaac left, he wouldn't clean first. Then again, he didn't clean recently with the dust gathered."

Plus, this place was a dump for a royal. What the hell was going on?

I didn't like this. I didn't like having too many questions without answers during a mission. That was when accidents happened, and this was no basic mission. This was Marian's life.

"It's either he moved, or he's gone for good," Killian walked away to leave.

"Untamed vampires don't walk away when they've marked someone," I joined him, exiting the house. "He showed himself to Marian yesterday, so I doubt he's decided to give up and leave for good. The pack must remain on alert, and Marian will have to remain with me for a while."

"I agree," Killian and I stopped on the street to stare at the house. "Plus, the longer he's running around, the more likely bodies will start turning up. That hasn't happened yet, but it will."

"And you don't want me to reach out to the Hunter Organization, do you, Killian?"

He didn't answer, but that was a loud enough no. I could tell he was really on edge about Isaac potentially being a special vampire. If the Hunters came in, I could speak from experience that Isaac wouldn't be spared. An out-of-control royal was like a werewolf alpha that turned into a rogue wolf. With all that power, they were too great a threat. If Isaac could be saved for Marian, I'd try to offer him help. If not, he'd have to be put down to protect everyone.

Now for the hard part, explaining that to her.
