“Yep.”

“I’ll go and see if he needs some help with the drinks.” She crossed the room, her heart squeezing when he caught sight of her and smiled at her. “Hey.”

“Hey, Kristy Smyth’s back in town.”

“Yeah?” Play it cool, Sinclair. You need to totally pretend you don’t know he just had Kristy Smyth’s perky breasts mashed against his chest.

“Yeah, she split up from her husband and now she’s staying with her parents. Asked me if I would take her to the ice cream shop.”

“Did she now? And what did you say?” She knew her voice had a tone, but she couldn’t seem to help it.

“I said no.”

“Well, you didn’t have to, on my account.”

“Mikayla.” His voice had a tone too, and it forced her to lift her gaze to his. He raised his hand and brushed her hair behind her ear. The light in his eye pulled at her and so she found herself leaning in, raising her lips to his.

“What can I get you, Mack?”

She pulled back hastily as the bartender claimed Rafe’s attention. He ordered the drinks and by the time he turned back to her, she’d schooled her expression to one of bland disregard. Or so she hoped. Bloody hell, she was bad at this, she thought to herself.

They settled back at the table in time to hear the MC reveal the scores. “Hey, we’re in front!” Nora said.

“Oooh, well, now the stakes are high. I’ve never won one of these things before. What’s the next round?”

Nora checked the sheet. “Music.”

“Oh, this’ll be easy. They’ll do Aussie music to start, and the answers will be either Cold Chisel, INXS or AC/DC. You know, the big Australian bands.” Mikayla twinkled at Callum as she spoke.

“Rude,” was all he said in reply.

“Alright, everyone, let’s go. We’re going to start with a Who am I?”

“Thomas Jefferson!”

“You always say that at who am I questions,” Rafe said to Mikayla.

“I’ll be right one day,” she replied, reaching for her beer.

“This is a music round. Why would the answer be Thomas Jefferson?”

“You don’t know that he didn’t play a musical instrument.”

Everyone laughed as Rafe said, “You’ve got me there.”

Mikayla turned her attention back to the MC. “I was formed in nineteen ninety-two and was originally named “Innocent Criminals” in the city of—”

“Silverchair,” Leah and Callum said together, then looked at each other in surprise.

Nora wrote it down and they waited for the MC to move on to the next question.

“Who had a hit in nineteen sixty-seven withSomebody to Love.Bonus point if you can name the album.”

“Jefferson Airplane,” John said.

“Ha! See!” Mikayla said to Rafe, triumphantly.

“Nineteen sixties rock band. Not a US president.”
