“Here, sit down.” Leah guided Mikayla to the other recliner and started wiping the hydrating mask away.

“You wrangled an extra three minutes of that mask on me, you know.”

“I’m aware.”

“Evil.”

“Not even sorry.”

“Just so you know, I draw the line at vaginal steaming.”

“Oh, shame, I had that scheduled for three o’clock.”

“Funny.”

As Mikayla settled back in the chair and waited for Leah to set up the foot spa, she let her mind wander. With the spa filled with warm, soapy water and bubbling away, she said, “Juniper?”

“Mm?”

“Are you going to have another baby?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“When will you know?”

Juniper laughed. “I don’t know that, either.”

“You don’t know much.”

“Sorry. Why are you asking?”

“I don’t know, really. I was just thinking about it. Like, you totally knew you wanted Billy. You knew it so much you went and did it on your own. How did you know?” When Juniper didn’t answer, Mikayla opened her eyes and looked over at her. She was gazing up at the ceiling, a thoughtful frown between her brows.

“I just started getting a sense that something was missing. Like I was vaguely unfulfilled. Then I started getting really restless, but I didn’t know why. Then when I’d see other people with babies or children, I’d start to feel a longing that wouldn’t leave me alone. I don’t have that restless, longing feeling right now, so I know I’m not ready.”

“Right.” Mikayla closed her eyes again, really enjoying the feel of the warm water bubbling around her ankles.

“Why are you asking? Feeling clucky?”

“No, of course not. Just curious.”

“Why of course not? It’s a pretty normal feeling once you get to a certain age.”

Mikayla snorted. “I’m not that old, thank you.”

“I was younger than you by a year or so.”

“Well, anyway, I wouldn’t even consider it until I’m in a committed relationship.” There was a long silence. It spun out for so long that Mikayla opened her eyes to see what was going on. Her two friends were staring at her from across the room. “What?”

“Oh, nothing. Just that from where we’re sitting, your relationship is looking pretty committed.” This from Leah, who normally never weighed in on topics like this.

“Nah. We’ve just found a good groove. Now that I’ve got over myself, that is.”

“What do you mean, got over yourself?” Juniper asked.
