“But that’s Roger McKenzie. That’s his shtick. Violence.”

“Okay. So, what does this have to do with you?”

“Everything.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m his son.”

“And?”

Rafe hesitated for a really long time, wondering if he could even say the words out loud. “And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” he said in a low voice. He was startled when Callum gave a barking laugh.

“That is, hands down, the stupidest fucking load of bullshit I have heard all week.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Pendjero,I have known you since you were a puny seven-year-old. If there was any of that shit in you, I would have seen it. And if you think I would have let you anywhere near my sister, you’re brain dead.” Callum laughed again. “I mean, the way you met my sister! Getting your ass whipped and her coming to your rescue. She’s got more violence in her than you do, mate.” Callum clapped him on the shoulder, still laughing.

Rafe felt a little, niggling, sliver of hope, but he wasn’t sure. Callum didn’t know everything. And it wasn’t like he could tell him. It was his sister, after all.

Callum sighed. “Alright. What else?”

“I don’t trust myself with her.”

“What, as in you’re actually worried you’re going to assault her?” Calum asked, startled.

“Something like that.”

“What? Why?”

Rafe didn’t really know how to answer. This was incredibly hard to admit, even to himself, let alone saying it out loud to Mikayla’s brother.

“When I’m with her, I feel…” He didn’t know how to say it.

“Like hurting her?”

“No, not like that.”

Callum sighed with frustration. “Like what, then? You gotta help me out here, mate.”

“I feel like I can’t be sure I’m not going to cross a line.”

“Okay, but if the line you’re worried about crossing is not about hurting her, what is it?”

Rafe thought about that. He didn’t actually know.

“Right, this is gonna get weird and it’s a one and done conversation.” He didn’t go on and Rafe glanced at him, gave him a nod when he saw that he was waiting for agreement. “So, you’re worried you’re going to cross a line. Have you ever come remotely close to crossing the line with her? Has she ever asked you to stop, and you haven’t stopped?”

Rafe thought back to that night. At the lookout. She told him to stop, and he’d stopped, pulled away, then she’d dragged him back. Please, Rafe, I’m begging you.He shook his head.

“Have you ever pushed her to sleep with you when she wasn’t keen?”

Rafe shook his head immediately.

“Never had sex with her when she couldn’t consent?”

“Fuck no!”
