“He told you?” She felt a delicious thrill at the memory. “What did he say?”

“Nothing, because he didn’t mean to tell me that much. But he knows I’m gonna hit you up for the goss, so don’t play coy.”

Leah was perfectly happy to talk through exactly what had happened. She hoped that she could get some perspective on all these new feelings she was experiencing, so she said, “Okay, but not in here. It’s weird.”

“Roger that. Let’s go downstairs.”

Leah had one hundred percent of Mikayla’s attention once they were sitting outside on the back veranda, cups of tea in hand and a plate of biscuits on the table. She started off a little haltingly, not really sure how much detail Mikayla was after. Turned out it was all of it, so she started with sitting on her couch under the blanket with the storm raging. “Rude,” Mikayla said when Leah told her about Callum asking her what the fuck she was doing on the ladder. “Hot,” she said about him handing the sweater over. “Aww,” she said when he scooped up Bluebell and gave her a pat. But then she had no words when Leah described Callum pulling her into his lap for a long, intoxicating kiss and then just holding her in his arms. All night. “So what happened when you woke up?”

Leah frowned for a moment. “I just felt really awkward and shy again. Like maybe it had been a one off and now it was going to be weird between us again. Because I hadn’t meant to fall asleep and for him to be stuck there all night.”

Mikayla, her eyes dancing, said, “I can pretty confidently say that I don’t think he felt stuck there. All tucked in under a Leah blanket. He would have loved it.” She took a moment to appreciate Leah’s blush before continuing. “Plus, he definitely doesn’t want the kiss to be a one off.”

“You think so?”

“I know so. Absolutely. Categorically. He wants to kiss you again.”

Leah felt a little breathless at the idea.

“You want my advice?”

“Hm, not sure. Do I?”

“Yes, you do. Lay one on him.”

“What, just kiss him?”

“Yes.”

Leah shook her head adamantly. “I couldn’t do that.” Letting him know, in the firelit darkness, that he was wrong when he thought she didn’t want him to kiss her, was totally different to making a move. She wasn’t sure there was enough mulled wine in the world to make her brave enough to do that.

“Course you can.”

“But he might not want me to. He might push me away. It’s very…brazen.”

“Okay, the eighteen hundreds called, they want their damsel back. He won’t push you away. He’ll love it. Because if I know anything about my brother, he’s going to go back to treating you with kid gloves. He’ll be worried about scaring you or overwhelming you. If you want to kiss him again, you gotta make the move.”

Leah looked at her uncertainly. She definitely wanted to kiss him again. “And he’ll like it?”

“He’ll love it,” she said again.

“Okay. Maybe.”

“Ooooohhhhh!! Yessss!” Mikayla said, gleefully. “And you gotta promise to tell me all about it.”

“You’re a pervert.”

“Not ashamed to admit it.”

Leah had a little germ of an idea. “Can I use the washing machine?”

“Random. Yeah, course you can.”

“Just thought I’d wash the wet clothes in my bag.” When Mikayla continued to eye her in confusion, she said, “And Callum’s jumper.”

“Right. I smell a plan brewing. I like it. Oh, here’s Mum and Dad.” With that, the conversation was over.
