“Why not? I can afford it and you can pay me back. It’s only money.”

“That’s crazy.”

“You’re crazy.”

She laughed. “I am not.”

“You know what, let’s have this argument if the insurance doesn’t get approved. We’re wasting perfectly good kissing time.”

She laughed again. “You’re so right,” she said, leaning in as he put his arm around her. She scooted closer as their lips met, sighing when she felt his tongue meet hers. How did a man learn to kiss like that? She wondered. Lots of practice, her mind answered. But she didn’t let that get to her. He was here now. Sitting on the beach with her on a bright spring day. The sun warm on his skin. The light breeze ruffling his hair. Kissing her. Kissing her endlessly.

She smiled when he pulled back but kept his arm around her. “Mikayla was right.”

“Unlikely.”

“Shows what you know. She told me that if I wasn’t careful, you would go back to treating me with kid gloves. So I had to lay one on you if I wanted to kiss you again.”

“Oh yeah, she was right. I’ll have to send her some flowers.”

Leah chuckled. Callum kissed her again before pushing to his feet. “Right, I’m going to run some of Bluebell’s energy off,” he said, holding his hand out to Leah. She felt the tingle when she put her hand in his and he pulled her up, linking his fingers casually with hers as they set off down the beach. Oh yes, this was very nice. He whistled for Bluebell, currently giving enthusiastic chase to a flock of seagulls. She stopped mid run, spun around and bolted back to them. Without letting go of Leah’s hand, Callum made Bluebell sit before flinging the ball launcher and saying, “Get it!” Bluebell was off like cannon shot and Leah laughed again. “You know what we should do?”

“What should we do?”

“Have a date.”

There was that warm flush again. “Okay,” she said quietly.

“Tonight,” he said, flinging the ball for Bluebell again.

“Okay,” she said again.

“Great. I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“Don’t be late.”

“I won’t.”

Once Bluebell had run herself ragged, they walked back to Callum’s truck. Leah smiled when he opened the car door for her. “That’s really not necessary.”

“I know. It’s just an excuse.” He clicked his fingers for Bluebell to get into the back seat, rolling his eyes when she scrambled with her back legs and he had to give her butt a push.

“You were saying?”

“I was saying, it’s just an excuse. So I can do this.” He pressed a kiss to her smiling lips, then waited while she climbed into the truck, closing the door behind her and going around to the driver’s side.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Leah smacked her lips together then rubbed them, making sure the lipstick was perfectly even. She leaned back to look at herself in the bathroom mirror. She’d kept her makeup pretty simple, since Callum had said to dress casually. She’d also left her hair down, just running the straightener through it and adding some smoothing cream. She’d possibly overthought what to wear, since casual usually meant jeans and a nice top. But she never wore jeans. Since she hadn’t packed with the idea that she would be going out, she had to work at upgrading one of her casual dresses. A belt, some jewelry and ballet flats would have to do.

As she moved back into Callum’s room to get her purse, the thought flashed across her mind that if anything, she probably would have preferred a night in. She wanted Callum to kiss her again and he was hardly going to do that at a restaurant. Or wherever he was taking her.

“Callum’s here,” Nora called up the stairs. Leah closed the bedroom door and walked down the stairs with an amused smile. The idea of Callum’s own mother calling to her to come downstairs for their date was funny. Stepping into the kitchen, she tried her best to ignore the thudding of her heart at the sight of him.

“You look gorgeous.”

“Thank you. So do you.” Seriously, how could one man look so hot, just in jeans and a nice shirt. Her skin warmed at the flicker of heat she saw in his eyes as he leaned in to kiss her cheek. Callum called out to John and Nora, comfortably ensconced on the couch in the loungeroom, that they were off. Leah laughed when Nora remonstrated with Callum not to bring her back too late.

Leah, following Callum out through the laundry and down the veranda steps, frowned in confusion when he turned towards the backyard instead of the driveway. She didn’t say anything as he headed across the yard, pulled open the front door of the unit and ushered her inside. She stopped short just inside the doorway. Straight away she was hit with the aroma of something really delicious on the stove. Her heart melted when she saw what he’d done. The little dining table was set for two, covered in a snowy white tablecloth, with two candles already burning.
