Georgie scoffed. “Yeah, just a bit. But hey, at least your shitty ex-husband is going to pay.”

“How did you know he was my ex?”

“I saw him at court one day, with his very pregnant girlfriend.”

“Oh.”

Georgie looked at her for a long moment. “Honestly, I was never happier. The day I realized you weren’t with him, I could have skipped out of court. Well, I mean, not literally. But you know.”

“Yeah, I know.”

The waiter returned with their wine and bruschetta.

“I would have tried to get in touch, then. Honestly, I would have. But I was a mess.”

“It’s okay. I understand.”

Georgie looked away for a long moment, watching the traffic crawling up Lygon Street. “I never forgave myself, you know.”

“What for?”

“For letting you go.”

“Huh? I don’t think you let me go.”

Georgie’s eyes swung back to Leah’s face. “I knew he was an asshole. And I let him come between us.” She swallowed heavily. “I wasn’t strong enough to stand up for you. I’m sorry for that. Like, really sorry for that.”

Leah reached out and grabbed Georgie’s hand, holding it in hers. “You know, the main reason why I messaged you? Well, two reasons, actually.”

Georgie shook her head.

“Firstly, it’s to say sorry to you. For lettingyougo. Scott made it so hard. He was awful about you. And I never stood up for you. I just did what he said.” She brushed a tear away. “And I’m really, really sorry for that.”

Georgie squeezed her hand. “Right. Okay. So we’re both really, really sorry. Do you think we can move on now?”

“Yes, please.”

“Great.” Georgie pulled her hand away from Leah’s and reached for her wine glass. “Here’s to us.”

Leah smiled widely as she clinked her glass against Georgie’s. “To us.” She took a sip of wine, leaning back in her chair, feeling like an enormous weight had been lifted from her shoulders. “So the other reason I messaged you was because I met up with Scott a few months back.” Leah told Georgie all about the conversation with Scott, about how he was falling apart, about the bribe.

“Jesus.”

“Yeah, so that was all pretty awful, but it ended on a high. My friend Mikayla made him piss his pants.”

Georgie gave a hoot of laughter, leaned forward in her chair, and said, “Tell me all about that!” They were giggling like teenagers by the time Leah had finished the story. Leah felt like the years that had passed since they last saw each other just disappeared.

Then her smile faded. “Can you do something with the information about the bribe?”

Georgie turned thoughtful. “I don’t know. Maybe. I’ll speak to my lawyer.” She hesitated.

“What is it?”

“Well, it might mean dragging you in as a witness.”

Leah waved a hand. “Oh, sure, that’s fine.”

“Wow, you have changed!”
