“Oh yeah! I get a sister! I get the best sister!”

“Aw, thanks, Mik,” Leah said, a little teary again.

William stepped forward with Billy in his arms. Callum had to catch the little boy as he threw himself at him. “I loved that song.”

“Thanks, mate.”

“Your love is shiny.”

Leah smiled and ruffled his hair. “It feels shiny.”

Then they stood around talking. A lot.

“Alright, guys, we’re gonna head off,” Callum said, trying to put some authority in his voice. He desperately wanted to get Leah to himself. But they all kept talking. On and on and on. In the end, he just walked off. “Car’s over here,” he said, dragging Leah with him.

“Come over for dinner tomorrow,” Nora called out.

Leah stopped, turning back. “Okay. Lovely, what ca—.”

Callum redirected her firmly. “Nope. We’re going.”

“Alright then,” she said with a giggle.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

They got to the truck, parked behind the oval to provide easy access to the stage. Callum moved to the passenger door, opening it and waving Leah forward. She smiled, sweet and sexy, pausing at the door, looking at him expectantly. He pulled her into his arms, smiling back at her before brushing his lips lightly across hers. Just a little promise. For later. She slid her arms around his waist and rested her head on his chest. “I missed you.”

“Ditto.” He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

“I’m sorry I took so long to come back. I had some things to sort out.”

He ran his hands down her arms and linked his fingers with hers. “That’s okay. I’m just glad you came back.”

She sighed. “Me too.” She pulled away and climbed into the truck, giving him a soft smile when he closed the door.

They drove to Leah’s in silence, Callum keeping hold of Leah’s hand in his lap as he drove. He pulled to a stop near the veranda, switched off the headlights and turned the ignition off. Then he sat there, looking through the windscreen, gathering his thoughts.

“We’re going to do this now?”

He glanced at Leah, shadowy in the dark interior of the truck. “I think we should.”

“Okay. This was not how I planned for any of this to go, by the way.”

“How did you plan for it to go?” He reached up and turned the interior light on.

“I was going to invite you over tomorrow, sit down with you and give you a list of my demands.”

“Sounds scary.”

She chuckled. “Not really. There was going to be coffee and Tim Tams. You would have negotiated on the demands and we would have gone to bed.”

“I wouldn’t have.”

“Wouldn’t have what?”

“Negotiated on the demands. I would have given you everything you asked for.”

She reached up and caressed his cheek. “I know that now, actually. Why is that?”
