“Aye, most likely. Would you like me to request them?” At her nod, Ryan went back inside for his tablet, logged into his account and typed her name in. “Georgina May Quinn, Tattenham Street, Caulfield.”

“That’s me.”

“Right, then, Georgie May. Sign your name here.” He held out the tablet and stylus and Georgie signed it. “It’ll take a few minutes to transfer over,” he said, placing the tablet on the table, picking up his coffee and leaning back in his chair. “How’s Brandon?”

Georgie rolled her eyes, making Ryan smile. “He’s fine. Persistent as shit, but fine.” She took a sip of coffee. “Did you know he’s a millionaire?”

“Ah, no, I did not.”

“Yeah, he and a friend designed a meditation app. Crazy, hey? That you can become a millionaire from doing that?”

“Yeah.” Ryan considered Brandon for a moment and thought it wasn’t that surprising. The lad had a way about him. His tablet pinged and he picked it up, typed in the code and accessed Georgie’s medical records. He knew he had to brace himself and he worked to keep his face impassive as he scrolled through. Sheet after sheet, detailing blood loss, transfusions, ventilation, stitches, broken bones, trauma, recovery.Patient refusing pain relief.Over and over again. He got to the end, which covered recommended surgeries after she’d been discharged for the final time. “Do you mind if I ring my surgeon?” She shook her head, so he retrieved his phone and pressed the contact for Dr Jennifer McKenzie.

“Ryan, sorry I missed you this morning. Couldn’t get out of the house on time. The kids were crazy.”

“No worries. I need you to look at something for me.” He gave her the details and waited while she pulled them up on her computer.

“Okay, what have we got here? Recommended hip surgery…from over two years ago?”

“Aye.”

“I see.” He heard her exhale sharply. “What do you need to know?”

“Best options, likely outcomes, schedules.” He held his finger up to Georgie as she shook her head.

“Well, provided that there hasn’t been too much deterioration since these scans and x-rays were done, I’d be confident of a full recovery, maybe a slight limp, given her age and if she embraced a rehabilitation regime. I would expect to do a lot of debridement and I can’t imagine getting away without reconstructing the labrum. I may get away with an arthroscopy, but I won’t know until I’ve got her on the table.”

“Right. And when could you do it?”

She paused. “Whoever this girl is, she should not be walking around on that hip. I can’t begin to imagine how much pain she’s in.”

“A lot.”

“Right. I’ll rearrange my schedule for this, Ryan. You just say the word.”

“Thanks. I appreciate it. I’ll be in touch.” He hung up and relayed all of that information to Georgie.

“I…I only wanted to ask about the surgery, what needs to be done and how I get better. I didn’t mean for you to do it.”

“Why would you not want me to do it?”

“It’s not that I don’t want you to, it’s that…”

“If you would rather a referral and go to a different hospital, I can arrange that. But this is my job. This is what I do. It’s no imposition. Okay?”

“Okay.”

With the first major hurdle over, Ryan pushed on. “What else is holding you back. Pain relief. Taking drugs. Yes?” At her nod, he said, “I don’t think you need it, but I can oversee your drugs. Lock them up. Administer them. You don’t have to be responsible for them at all.”

“Okay.”

“What next then?”

“Rehab.”

“What about it?”

“Where I go? How long I stay? When can I stop the drugs?”
