“So, swimming today.”

“Yeah.” Georgie looked at Mikayla as she spooned yoghurt over the fruit. “What’s that look for?”

“Just, you know, two hotties swimming around in the ocean. Being hot. And wet.”

Georgie burst out laughing. “God, you’re crazy.”

“Wonder what kind of bathers he wears.”

“Just shorts, apparently.”

“Hmm. Might take the dogs for a run on the beach later.”

“Aren’t you a happily engaged, up the duff woman?”

“Sure. Doesn’t mean I can’t look.” Mikayla grinned mischievously as she ran her hand up and down the slight bulge of her belly. “How long have we got till he gets here?”

Checking her phone, Georgie said, “Ten minutes.”

“Finish your muffin and we’ll get you suited up.”

Her heart thumped, hard and uncomfortable, in her chest. It was her usual reaction to this scenario and as the days went on, she was finding it harder to hide.

“What’s up?”

“Nothing.” Yep, she was definitely getting worse at covering it up, she thought to herself.

“Come on, Quinn.” The tone suggested that Mikayla was not going to let it go. She sensed a problem and it was not in her nature to let it lie.

Georgie looked down at the half-eaten muffin in front of her. “It’s just that it weirds me out when people see me. Without clothes on.”

“I’ve seen you naked before.”

“Yeah, I know.” Georgie shrugged. “It’s harder to take, the better I feel, I think.”

“I don’t get it. You don’t have anything I haven’t seen a thousand times before. A body is a body.”

“I don’t mean that. Like, it’s not a modesty thing.”

“What is it then?”

Georgie forced herself to eat some of the fruit salad. She had a lump in her throat the size of a golf ball. She didn’t look up as she said, “I don’t like people seeing my scars.”

Mikayla didn’t say anything. The silence spun out until Georgie was forced to look up. Mikayla’s eyes were intense. “Darling, your scars are nothing to be ashamed of and nothing you should hide from people. You hear me?”

Swallowing hard, Georgie nodded.

“You hear me?” Mikayla said again, more demanding.

“Yes, I hear you.”

“But you don’t believe me. I hope you do one day, because you deserve it.”

Georgie wasn’t sure what else to say, so she just said, “Thank you.”

“Right. Three minutes till Doctor O’Hotstuff gets here. Let’s get you ready.”

Ten minutes later, Georgie was standing next to Ryan’s car, parked on Beach Road. “Crutches or I carry you.”
