“Do you? Really?” She’d felt uncertain about the whole thing. Wondered if she would be better off in Melbourne. She had enough money to go wherever she wanted. Do whatever she wanted. She said as much. “But every time I think of where I could go, when I imagine being somewhere else, I don’t like it. My people are here, I guess.”

“You’ve been alone a long time, mo chroi. Wanting to be around people that love you makes sense.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right.”

“Plus, it’s a lovely place to raise a family.”

Georgie threw her hand out, reflexively dismissing the idea.

“You wouldn’t have any problems carrying a baby.”

“It’s not that.” They walked on in silence. As it spun out, Georgie felt all these feelings bubble up. They needed to be said. “You know I have an IUD?”

“Aye.”

She put her hands in the pockets of her hoodie, looking at the ground as she hobbled along. “When the doctor told me that it would be a good idea, because there’s no way I could be pregnant until I’d had the surgery, I almost laughed in her face.”

“Why?”

“Because how could I ever fall pregnant?”

“I don’t follow you.”

Georgie swallowed. “Who would want to go to bed with me? Who would want to see me naked?”

Ryan stopped short. He didn’t say a word, but Georgie could feel him staring at her. She flicked a glance at him and froze. He was looking at her with scorching heat swirling in his eyes. “Me.”

She felt the breath whoosh out of her body. “You—you want to go to bed with me?”

“Aye. Desperately.”

“I…I don’t understand.”

“What don’t you understand?”

“You’re always so…” She trailed off. He waited. He wasn’t going to help her out. She swallowed again. “I never get that vibe from you.”

“And you wouldn’t believe the effort that restraint costs me.”

He’d loosened the rein on that restraint. Georgie could see it in his eyes. She couldn’t deny it. “I never guessed.”

“Oh, I see. All this time, you thought that I was just a benevolent doctor. Helping you out of the goodness of my heart. But all the while my master plan has been to get you fixed up so I can shag you.”

Knowing he was joking from the glint in his eye, Georgie laughed, even as a warm flush suffused her body. “Why didn’t you let me know?”

“It hardly seemed fair to put you in that position. Especially when…”

“Especially when what?”

“You don’t even want me to kiss you.”

“How do you know I don’t want you to kiss me?” She stepped closer to him.

“I never get that vibe from you,” he said softly.

“And you wouldn’t believe the effort that restraint costs me.”

His eyes darkened as he took a half step toward her. “So all this time, you’ve wanted me to kiss you?”
