“You haven’t even seen inside yet.”

“I don’t need to. I already know I love it.”

“How about we check it out anyway.”

“Yeah, okay.” Feeling a thrill of excitement as she walked with Brandon across the expanse of grass between the clinic and her house, Georgie forced herself to take a breath. She needed to calm down. Unable to help herself, she practically bounced up the steps behind him, onto a narrow veranda covered in mosaic tiles. “Oh, I love this.” Brandon pushed open one of the double doors and stood back for her to go in ahead of him. “I’ve always wanted an entrance hall!”

“Have you really?”

“Yes. It seems really grand, somehow.” She turned left, stepping into a sitting room with polished wood floors and doors that led out onto a veranda that offered a stunning view of the ocean. “Wow.” Light shimmered around the room and looking up, she saw it refracted in the crystals hanging from two small chandeliers. “Jesus, I might cry.”

“Kitchen’s through here. That should set you off.”

“Right.” It did. It was a large open space with original fittings in pristine condition, wide benchtops and a bow window overlooking a courtyard garden that ended at the base of the cliff. It was a far cry from the tiny galley kitchen she’d had in her Caulfield flat. Georgie felt the tears fill her eyes and smiled at Brandon. “It’s so beautiful.” He put his arm around her and she rested her head on his shoulder, basking in the moment. “My very own home.”

“Yep.”

Pulling back, she pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Let’s check out the rest.”

“Okay.” The rest consisted of a dining room tucked behind the kitchen that flowed into a little sitting room, then on to a short hallway with three bedrooms and a bathroom.

“The bathroom’s functional but would definitely need to be redone.”

“Yeah.” It was a mess, with tiles falling off the walls and lifting from the floor and a chipped basin. “Can we keep the tub, though?”

“Probably. If you’re really keen on it.”

Georgie smiled at Brandon’s skeptical look. “It’s got claw feet. I’m keen on it.”

“Alright then, I’ll see what I can do. Let’s head back to your cabin and order some furniture.”

“Oh. My. God. Let me ring Leah. I can’t do this without her.” As they walked out and across to Brandon’s car, Georgie stopped short, looking over at the little cottage. “Bran?”

Glancing at her as he opened the car door, he said, “Yeah?”

“Why the big house for me and the cottage for you?”

He’d put his sunglasses on so she couldn’t read him when he shrugged and said, “Because you’ll need the space.”

“Why will I need the space? More than you?”

“Kids,” he replied, his tone flat.

“Huh?”

“Get in the car.”

“No.”

He heaved a sigh. “Leave it.”

“No. Why will I need the space for kids and you won’t?”

“Because I’m never gonna have them.”

“Why not?”
