“Oh, no, don’t do that. I want to hear all about the land lobsters on Lord Howe Island! Whatever the hell they are.”

That was enough for Andrew. He launched into an exhaustive explanation of the plight of the insects, thought to be extinct for decades and how he’d led a team to discover a colony on a rocky outcrop not far from the island. Georgie listened attentively, as though it was the most fascinating story she’d ever heard. Ryan caught Sharon’s eye and they smiled at each other. When they finished dinner, Andrew offered to show Georgie some of his research.

Once they’d gone, Sharon picked up her glass of wine and eyed Ryan pensively. “She’s very lovely,” she said after some time.

“She is.”

“You’re serious about her?”

“I am.”

“Good. It’s about time you settled down,” she said with a teasing glint in her eye.

Ryan laughed at her, but then his laughter faded.

“What is it?”

He drew a deep breath. “She’s the one.”

“Right. I hope you invite me to the wedding. I’ll give you away, if you like.”

He gave her a strained smile. “Not sure there’s going to be a wedding.”

Sharon frowned. “No? Because she seems pretty into you. Does she know how you feel?”

“No.”

“You should tell her.”

“I can’t.”

“Why not?” When he didn’t answer she leaned across the table and grabbed his hand, holding his gaze for a long moment. “You should tell her.” Her voice almost vibrated with intensity.

“Jesus, why do you care so much?”

“Because I want you to be happy.”

“I’m happy enough.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“Then what do you mean?”

“I want to see someone give you what you deserve. Give you what I couldn’t. Or wouldn’t.”

“Children?”

“Yes.”

“It weighs on you, does it?”

“Yes.”

“It shouldn’t.”

“It does,” she replied with a shrug.

“It shouldn’t.”
