He was pretty sure for most parents it was just a thing they said when kids wanted anything short of moving back in.

“You’ll stay for dinner.”

He should have known.

“A quick one. We’re having a bit of an emergency.”

His mother laughed and he was pretty sure she would have swatted him if he’d been there. “Oh, Camden. Who has a woodworker’s emergency?”

He heaved a sigh. Sadly, he would have thought the same thing a day ago.

“That would be Starlight Harbor since Ms. Angie crashed the sleigh.”

There was stunned silence on the other end before he heard the delayed gasp.

“That woman is a nuisance. And not just because of the sleigh. That sleigh is part of our history—and you love that thing. There were days I’d wished you’d never seen it.”

He could only imagine.

“You come by for whatever you need,” she continued. “I’ll have a quick dinner for tonight and let your dad know there’s not a game on the TV until you leave.”

Vivian

“Lyra, you’re a goddess! Save me!”Vivian had dropped off the wrecker and the sleigh at town hall and did what any sane woman who was having child troubles, work troubles, and apparently man troubles would do: She ran to get some caffeine and a check-in with a bestie.

The door hadn’t even fallen shut behind her when Lyra pointed to a small table with a coffee and two muffins sitting on it.

Lyra was smart enough to know neither of those muffins were for her, but she brought a tea with her as she sat across from Vivian.

“I heard Ms. Angie has really done it this time.”

Vivian shook her head. She needed the caffeine and sugar before even pretending to address this.

Lyra just sat, waved at people who walked by the window, and sipped her tea. There were probably a million things she needed to be doing, but since Spence was still getting all his online-work-life stuff back on track, Vi was going to pretend her friend was completely free for any type of breakdown she needed to have.

“Skye may actually arrest her this time.” Vi nodded toward the muffin. “Little early for cranberries, isn’t it?”

“Nova Scotia.”

“Ah.” She took another bite, happy for Nova Scotia, and went on, “The sleigh is a mess, Lyra. I’m only saying that in this room with no other humans and reasonably assured no one has listening devices. I thought Cam was either going to cry or throttle her.”

“Which was it?”

“Cry, I think. You should have seen how many deep breaths that man took before he turned around with his typical sunny, charming smile on his face.”

“Charming, huh?”

Vi rolled her eyes. “You know he’s charming.Heknows he’s charming. The whole darn town knows he’s charming.”

“Uh-huh.” Lyra took a sip of her tea. “And good-looking. The whole town knows he’s good-looking, too.”

“Sure.” Vi just shook her head because she knew she wasn’t going to win this one. “Good-looking. I mean, that’s subjective.”

“And he’s just nice, you know?” Lyra glanced toward the window, but Vi could feel her friend watching her out of the corner of her eye.

“Okay, what’s going on?”
