Of course, he didn’t think that time would come, so he might have to come up with a different measuring stick.

His feet eventually led him to Noah's café. He wasn't sure how he even got there, but as soon as he walked through the door, he knew he was in the right place.

"Cam!" Noah grabbed a mug and motioned to the end of the counter where there was an empty stool across from where Noah had his ever-present notebook open.

Cam sat, wrapped his hands around the mug, and stared past Noah.

Man, he was going to miss this guy. It was amazing how quickly Noah had become like another brother.

And as much as he loved Jamie, he also could predict what he'd say:Chin up, Cam. She'll come around. Just keep at it.

Only that’s obviously not what Vivian wanted. She’d been clear and that was all that mattered. He had to respect that.

“So.” Cam cleared his throat and Noah stopped to glance his way, giving him his full attention when he got a good look at him. “I’m going to be… um, doing some traveling here in a bit.”

“Really?” Noah’s voice was carefully neutral.

“Yup. There’s this guy I’ve been wanting to study under in Scotland. I shot him an email this morning. So, you know. I’m going to need you to…”

Cam waved his hand around as he didn’t have the words for “Watch out for my family and Vivian and Tyler and that my workshop doesn’t get burned down and everything I love and keep them safe.”

“Yeah.” Noah nodded. “Of course.”

“Good. Yeah, good. Thanks, man.”

“Right, so.” Noah pushed one of the cookies Lyra sent over each morning for him to sell his way. “How long you thinking? Couple weeks? A month maybe?”

“Probably longer than that.”

“Oh, like a semester abroad. I wanted to do that. Did the Army instead. Still abroad, but people occasionally shot at me.”

“Yeah, I’m not really sure. Maybe… let’s just say it’s open-ended.”

“Sure. Got it.” Noah slid him another cookie, then gave a head nod Cam just caught out of the corner of his eye.

“Stay as long as you want. Maybe we can grab dinner after this?”

Cam thought about everything he had to do before he left, but Noah was on the top of his people list, so he said, “Sure,” and went back to scrolling through wood videos on his phone with his cookies.

“Hey, Cam.” When someone clapped him on the back, he turned to find all three of the lairds standing there. “Not starting work yet?”

“Oh, hey. Apparently, we can’t touch it until the insurance people get here today.”

McPhee nodded. “Makes sense. But we couldn’t help but overhear you saying you’re taking a trip.”

“Yeah. But not until this is done. Then I’ll be heading out. Scotland.”

They all murmured their approval at that.

“You’re moving on, then? Off into the big world?”

Cam nodded and looked down into his coffee. “I might have the chance to study under some master craftsmen.”

“Cam, correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you a master?”

“Well, yes. But it’s good to keep growing your art. They do some really interesting things over there I’d like to learn.”

“Mm-hmm.”
