I pinched my lips together to avoid giggling.

“I wish you a good night,” Alrick said.

He left, but not without lingering in the hallway, looking at me with longing, only to earn himself another look from Frida.

I expected her to turn on me, but instead, Frida smiled as if she was revisiting an old memory. “As love drunk as her parents,” she mumbled to herself. “You need to rest now, child. Tomorrow will be an important day. Your father wants to see you before the feast.”

I nodded.

“And don’t send your guards away again. They are for your protection. I shall send them back up.” She left the room, closing the door behind her.

Strange. Now that she mentioned it, I never saw any guards when Alrick came in. He must have sent them away.

My thoughts focused on him again. The world felt new to me; the air I breathed was charged with my excitement for tomorrow. I had found the love of my life, and my father now looked at me with love and pride, something he had not done in years.

I shook my head in disbelief as my fingers ran over my lips. I could still taste Alrick’s kiss on them.

I walked to the window and looked at the bright, full moon.

“Thank you, Mother,” I whispered, hoping she was watching over me from somewhere. The gods had shown kindness to me, after all. They’d given me a second chance to be more than a cold-hearted monster.

“I will never be the Night Queen again,” I said, more in a promise to her than myself. Wherever she was, I hoped she could hear me.
