“How so?” Mindy reached for one of the several empty glasses on the table and filled it with wine from the bottle in front of Olivia. The red liquid splashed into the glass. This wasn’t the first time they’d shared a glass of wine together here. Olivia loved chatting over a glass or two, like good friends.

“Don’t you find it strange that I got to keep everything—the money, the businesses, this lovely mansion—but she got nothing.”

“Who?”

“Andrei’s sister. She’s somewhere in Romania, penniless from what I’ve heard. I mean, I never knew my mother had this secret wealthy first husband and now he has a sister who probably thinks—” Olivia broke off.

“That you stole the money doing God knows what.”

Olivia nodded. “Exactly.”

Mindy frowned. “It’s a lot of money.”

“It is.”

“Have you considered . . .”

“Giving her some? Yes, I have. I feel like it’d be the right thing to do. I don’t need all of this,” Olivia said, stretching out both arms.

Mindy sat silently for a while, then looked up at Olivia. “You should go to Romania.”

Olivia raised her head, her interest drawn. “What? Me?”

“Yes, you. Didn’t you say your mother was from Romania?”

Olivia scratched her chin. “Yes, but I kinda was thinking about wiring her the money.”

“Why? Go to Romania, find the sister, and give her some money in person. Who knows? Maybe you still have some family over there. Distant aunts, cousins. I have them all over the country; I’ve always wanted to go hunt them down just for fun.”

Olivia turned it over in her head, and the more she thought about it, the more interesting and appealing the idea became. “My mom was pretty secretive about her past.”

“There you go.”

“And I did look for relatives on my father’s side here in the U.S. There are literally none—expect for two cousins who never replied to my emails.”

“Mm-hmm,” Mindy mumbled. “Now it’s time to do the same on your mother’s side. In Romania.”

Olivia tipped her head back, finishing her glass of wine in one, smooth motion. Then she shook her head with a smile.

“What?” Mindy wondered.

“Nothing. I was just thinking that this whole thing is getting crazier and crazier.”

Mindy smiled. “You’ll go then?”

Olivia smiled back at her then bit her lip.

Mindy raised her glass. “Now that is something to cheers to! Olivia Carter—kind-hearted heiress and adventurous world traveler.”

Olivia refilled her glass and raised it with a huge grin. “I’ll cheers to that.” Their glasses clinked together. “Let’s hope Andrei’s sister is happy to see me.”
