The keeper stepped into the room, and they turned around when he spoke. Once again, Olivia arched her eyebrows and glanced helplessly at Christian.

“He says the cook has left for the week.”

“Oh,” Olivia said, not even knowing this place had a cook.

“But the good news is the cook prepared several meals you can warm up in the kitchen.”

The keeper nodded and mumbled something. He grinned, exposing a golden tooth. Olivia smiled back at him. Then he turned and left.

“So what do you think?” Christian asked, rubbing his hands.

Doing her best to ignore the creepy feeling still gripping her, Olivia smiled. “About what, the tour? Or the castle?”

“Both.”

“The tour was great. Really in-depth and professional, I’d say.”

He took a half bow and grinned. “And the castle?”

She sucked her teeth and bit her lip. “I think . . . it’s great.” A soft beep drew their attention to Christian’s watch.

“Ooh,” he winced and looked up. “It’s getting quite late. I should be going now.”

Olivia froze. “Can’t you stay a little longer?” She glanced at him, then quickly looked away when their eyes met. “I mean, I could warm up something for you. It’d be boring having dinner alone.”

“Tempting, but well . . .” He tilted his head from side to side and pursed his lips as if trying to weigh the offer. What are you doing? He’s married! Get a hold of yourself and be a big girl!

“I’m sorry.” Her eyes strayed past him and settled on Mihai, who was still lurking in the hallway. What the heck is he doing there?“I-I understand,” she stuttered.

Christian turned around to the see what held her gaze captive, then turned back to face her. “On second thought, I am quite hungry. No harm done in taking in a quick bite before heading out, right?”

Olivia smiled with relief, a smile that faded slightly when she heard Mihai grunt in the distance before his shadow disappeared down the stairs.

“Great,” Christian said, clapping his hands. “Let’s go look for the kitchen.”

The kitchen was built to serve a whole castle, with several modern cooking stoves and counters—the only entirely updated room in the whole castle. This could have easily been any other modern kitchen—for rich people, that is. The cook, whoever that was, had stuffed the fridge with different Romanian foods. After Olivia went through the plastic containers like a kid opening presents, she decided on Jumari, which was smoked bacon and greaves, and a Romanian soup with freshly baked bread on the side. Christian had also grabbed a bottle of wine and had displayed great acrobatic skills in carrying all the items from the kitchen to the dining hall in one trip.

They sat next to each other at the large wooden dining table, which felt weird considering all the other empty seats. The table had been set up for a banquet fit for a king and queen, and yet there was nobody but the two of them.

“I wonder how, back then, families had discussions over a long table like this.”

Christian pointed at the chair at the far end of the table. “I bet the guy sitting all the way over there wouldn’t have heard a thing.”

Olivia laughed. Christian looked at her with a grin, his pretty smile warming her. Suddenly she felt guilty. What about his wife?

“Please apologize to your wife for me for making you late. I understand that you have to leave soon. They must be already waiting.”

“My . . .wife?” Christian seemed confused. “I’m not married.”

“The woman at your house wasn’t your wife?”

“No, that was my mother, and that other cutie was my sister. One of them.”

Olivia felt as if a huge rock had been pushed off her chest. But why did she feel that way? It’s not like I was jealous or anything, she told herself. Yet, she let out an embarrassing laugh, feeling her cheeks flushing with more than just the wine.

“I’m so sorry,” she said.
