My chest tightened. Leaning against the wall, I slid down until I hit the floor with a thump. “I can’t keep doing this.”

“Baby, I can give you what you want. I promise I can. I’m sorry about before. I’m sorry for fighting with you. Please forgive me. The kids miss you.Imiss you.”

My stomach twisted. “Stop using your fucking kids as bait. They have nothing to do with this. This is between us and only us, Roxanne.”

“Can she give you what I can?”

The hackles on the back of my neck rose. “What the hell are you talking about?” We hadn’t gone out in public with Meadow. There was no way she could be seen by Roxanne or anyone else that we mutually knew.

“You know, she’ll choose him over you one day. You’re a moody asshole, Sunny. She won’t be able to deal with that for long.” The sniffling was no longer there. And instead, she became the bitch that I had been married to.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I grumbled. “If you didn’t call for a specific reason, Roxanne, I have to go.”

“I’m pregnant.”

I rolled my eyes. “That’s not my fault. We haven’t fucked in years.”

She let out a frustrated scream. “You’re a fucking prick. I hate you.”

I stood. “Which is it? You love me or you hate me? Fucking pick one.”

“I will make both of your toys regret taking you from me.” Roxanne hung up, letting her words slither between us.

“Fuck.” I shoved my phone back in my pocket and slammed open the door.

A soft cry shattered my heart.

Meadow cupped her nose.

“Holy shit, pet.” I rushed to her. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, baby.”

“Fucking hell, Sunny.” Shade jumped off the bed, pulling Meadow away from me and leading her into the en suite bathroom.

“It was an accident,” I reassured them.

“It doesn’t matter what it was,” Shade snapped. “You need to control your temper. Especially when it comes to her.”

Meadow leaned her head back, pinching the bridge of her nose. “It’s fine. I’m fine.”

Ignoring Shade, I went to Meadow and turned her toward me. I placed a soft peck on her nose. “I’m sorry. You know I would never hurt you intentionally. But she…”

“Has you all wired up,” Meadow added for me.

“Yeah.” I ran my thumb down the bridge of her nose. “You’re not bleeding.”

“No. Thank God for that.” She looked in the mirror, scrunching and wiggling her nose. “Tell me about this woman. You said that she’s your ex-wife but clearly, there’s more to it than that.”

Shade sat on the toilet seat, raised an eyebrow and waited. It was like he was daring me to reveal all. Every little dark and dirty secret. Everything I had usually kept to myself but wanted to reveal at the same time.

“I…” I passed a glance at Shade. He nodded in encouragement even though I was sure he wanted to kick my ass for hurting Meadow in the first place. “She likes to make my life a living hell. I don’t even know why she’s calling now. It’s been awhile since she’s reached out.” I sighed. “She got pregnant with twins after we married. She also had me convinced they were mine until I caught her cheating. I had a DNA test done and they weren’t. But I still keep in contact with them since their real father has no idea they exist. I know they’re not mine, it still doesn’t mean that I didn’t love them any less. And she’s tried getting child support from me ever since.” I shrugged. That was it in a nutshell.

Meadow stared at me. “Really?”

“Yeah. I always knew the kids weren’t mine. I had a feeling anyway. But a part of me wanted to help her in any way that I could. Especially when babies were involved. So I did what I could. I sent her money. Bought her groceries. I had her fridge stocked for weeks on end. I made sure her children had clothing on their backs and food in their bellies, no thanks to their mother. At all.”

“You did all that, for children that aren’t even yours?” Meadow asked, stepping in front of me.

“It’s not a big deal.” I didn’t do it for recognition. I did it because there was a time where I did in fact love their mother.
