I took a chance and glanced at Busy.

She gave me a small smile, curling her fingers in mine and giving them a gentle squeeze.

“Yeah, I’m sure,” I told Rowan. “Have you found out anything else?” I asked him, needing to get the subject off of Busy and I. Because honestly, it was no one else’s business until I could figure out what the hell was going on between us myself.

“No but whatever Tommy’s doing, it’s making a wave underground.”

My stomach twisted. “What do you mean?” I brought Busy’s hand up to my mouth, gave her knuckles a soft peck, and stood from the bed. Releasing her, I began pacing.

“Between him and Roxanne, I’m not sure who’s worse. She wanted Sunny but couldn’t have him, so she went for Tommy instead. Tommy found out and didn’t like that shit, so he slapped her around a bit. It’s a mess.”

“How do you know this?”

“Tanner, Tanner. I know people, remember?”

I grunted. “Right. Tell me something. Tommy called here.”

“He did? How?”

“What do you mean how? That’s what I’m asking you, Rowan. He called Greyson’s niece. She’s innocent in all of this.” I stopped by the dresser and leaned against it.

“Is she that innocent though, T?”

My back stiffened. “What the hell does that mean?”

“I mean, if she’s with you, she’s sucked into this shit just as much as you are. If you want to keep her safe, I mean, if she’s your girl and all, then you’d better get out of there.”

My gaze snapped to Busy.

She was looking at the book I had been reading for the past few weeks. I had found it in one of the drawers of the empty dresser. It was good. And I was itching to finish it but now, it was like it didn’t matter anymore.

“Tanner,” Rowan said gently.

“Listen, I need you to find out as much information as you can on Tommy and Roxanne and everyone else involved in this shit. You know what to do and who to contact. Do it. Money is no object, Rowan. You know that. I’ll be in touch.” I hung up before I said something I regretted. But Rowan was right. Even though I didn’t want him to be.

“Everything okay?” Busy asked, placing the book back on top of the nightstand.

Was it? How could I tell her? How could I tell this woman who was my undoing, that I wanted her but feared for her life just the same.

“You want me,” I suddenly said, surprised at how low my voice was.

“I think that much is clear.” She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, patting the spot beside her. “Tanner,” she said gently. “You’re safe with me. I promise.”

“I don’t know you.” But even though I said those words, in all reality, Ididactually know her. She was sweet and kind. She brought food for me when she didn’t have to. She saw something in me that no one else did. She made me feel human instead of the monster most depicted me as. She had been the first woman to ever want to actually be my friend instead of just having sex.

“What’s going on, Tanner? One minute you want me and we’re almost having sex on more than one occasion and now, you’re suddenly closed off.” Busy stood from the bed and came toward me. “What’s wrong? Did I do something?”

Cupping her cheek, I slid my fingers to the back of her hair. “You could never do anything but being with me is dangerous, Busy,” I finally confessed.

“I’ve grown up with bikers, Tanner. I know that it can be dangerous. But you’re a good guy and I know you would do everything you could to keep me safe.”

“Of course I would.” I kissed her nose, leaning my forehead against hers. “I would give up my life first before I let something happen to you.” I realized then that those words had been the most honest ones I had ever said.

“That’s…” She swallowed noisily. “That’s pretty heavy.”

“I have no reason to beat around the bush, baby.” Before I could take things further like both of us wanted, I pushed away from her. “I need to talk to your uncle. Something’s going on and I don’t know what it is and it’s driving me fucking crazy. I need to make sure things are calm before we do anything.”

“Really?” She laughed. “I think we were about to do something before Rowan called.”
