“We have a visitor and we’re trying to get that taken care of.” I wasn’t sure how much I should tell them. Even though it was a video chat and we weren’t actually talking on a phone line, I had learned over the years that you could never be too careful.

“Oh. Is he hot?” Lori waggled her eyebrows.

Heather rolled her eyes. “Ignore her. She hasn’t been laid in a while.”

We all laughed.

“But to answer your question.” I paused. “He’s not just hot. He’s nice too and a gentleman. And—” A soft knock sounded on the door. “Come in.”

The door opened slightly, revealing…

“Tanner,” I whispered. “I need to go.” I disconnected the video chat before the girls could ask any more questions. I would explain everything later. “What’s wrong?” I asked, placing my phone on the nightstand.

He closed the door behind him, clicking the lock into place. “I wasn’t sure if this was your room or not but then I heard you talking.”

“I was chatting with my best friends,” I explained, suddenly feeling exposed. Even though he had seen me naked already, having him in my bedroom felt like another layer was stripped between us. I never had a boy in my room before. Not even my cousins were allowed in. “How did you sneak up here?”

Tanner went to my dresser and picked up a small stuffed teddy bear my mom had gotten for me during one of her weekends away with Dad.

“Everyone started talking about other shit. Nothing that had to do with me. I’m sure someone noticed that I’m no longer there. Or maybe they thought I went back downstairs.” He placed the teddy bear back on my dresser.

“Was anything decided? Or…” I swallowed hard when his dark eyes met mine in the reflection of the mirror.

“There’s a video. Greyson showed it to me. It makes it look like I shot Sunny, but I didn’t. I know they don’t believe me but I…” He turned toward me, leaning against the edge of the dresser. “I needyouto.”

“I do,” I insisted.

“Why?”

“You just said—”

“I know what I fucking said, Busy,” he snapped, white knuckling the edge of the dresser. “But I need to know why you believe me when you don’t even know me.”

I knelt on the bed, placing my hands on my knees. “I do know you.”

He looked away, his jaw clenching. “I don’t trust people. I never have. I was given a reason not to trust anyone at a very young age. People hurt people. It’s human nature. It’s why I love animals.”

“Tanner,” I said gently. “Come here.” I reached out for him, needing to have him in my arms. To hold him. To comfort him. To just be with him. Everything else could come later. It didn’t have to happen now. As much as I wanted him, I could wait for him to be ready. For us both to be ready.

When he didn’t move, I shuffled closer to the edge of the bed. “Please.”

He let out a slow sigh but finally came toward me.

Rising to my knees, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders as he pushed his face into the crook of my neck.

Sliding my hands down his back, I pushed my fingers beneath his hoodie.

Tanner leaned back and pulled off the sweatshirt, leaving his torso completely bare for me.

Brushing my fingers down the middle of his chest, I traced them over every hard line of him.

“Busy,” he murmured, kissing my jaw.

I turned my head.

He took the hint, crushing his mouth to mine.

The kiss wasn’t like the others. No. This time it went beyond desperate. It became frantic. To the point that it made my head foggy, and I couldn’t think of anything but having him inside me. My body buzzed, that familiar ache between my thighs becoming worse as time wore on. It was like so many things were about to happen that we just needed this time together before we could move on.
