“Can we see him?” Meadow asked. “SoIcan kick his ass?”

Shade grunted. “No ass kicking, baby.”

Vince gave my hand a gentle squeeze.

We followed Mom into the room that Dad was staying in.

He was sitting up, a deep scowl on his face. “It’s about time you came back in here, woman.”

Mom stopped in her steps. “Seriously, Angel? You are in no position to throw any of that shit at me.”

Dad huffed. “Come here,” he demanded. “Please,” he added gently when she wouldn’t budge. “Princess.”

“Men,” she mumbled under her breath and went to her husband. “You scared the shit out of me, asshole.” She sat on the edge of the bed, grabbing hold of his hand.

“I know. I’m sorry.” He looked at the rest of us. “I am sorry.”

“We heard you need glasses,” I said, going up to Dad. “You should probably listen to your wife.” I gave him a hug. “Right?”

“Have you told Vince you love him yet?” Dad whispered in my ear.

My eyes widened. “No.” I coughed, releasing him so Meadow could give him a hug as well.

“We were worried,” she said.

“I know.” Dad sat up straighter. “I’ll get glasses.” He scowled again. “But I’m going to complain about it.”

“I don’t care about that.” Mom placed a kiss on his cheek. “I just want you to be safe.” She looked back at me. “That reminds me. Gigi fell off a ladder a few months ago.”

“What?” Dad’s head whipped around. “And you’re just telling me now?”

Mom rolled her eyes. “She’s fine.” She waved a hand toward me. “Clearly, she’s fine. And Vince saved her anyway.”

Vince shifted beside me.

My cheeks heated as all eyes landed on us. “I am fine,” I reassured Dad. “I was at the center, putting in a new lightbulb but I promise, I’m fine. I’m not the one who needs glasses though.”

“What happened?” he demanded.

“The step gave out and she fell but I caught her,” Vince explained.

“Wow. Talk about being in the right place at the right time,” Meadow said, shaking her head.

“And who the fuck am I killing for leaving a faulty ladder at the center?” Dad growled.

“I’m just glad you’re okay,” I said, needing to take the conversation away from us when I could see the pink in Vince’s cheeks. Looked like he didn’t enjoy being the center of attention. Neither did I, unless I was dancing.

“Me too.” Dad looked between us, something flashing behind his dark eyes.

While Mom and Meadow carried on a conversation, Dad only stared at me.

I shifted from foot to foot, my hand dropping to my stomach. I winked, wondering if he would get the hint.

He caught the movement, raising an eyebrow. “Yes?”

I glanced up at Vince.

He chuckled. “Yes.”
