I didn’t see Gigi for the rest of the night. I did catch her cleaning every so often or picking up after people. She would sometimes throw her head back and laugh at whatever was said to her when she stopped to speak with someone. But other than that, she kept her distance. I was sure it was so I could mingle, hang with my friends and so on, but as much as I loved them, I needed Gigi more.

She would look my way every now and again. I would stand up taller and she would wave. Every time a guy stopped to talk to her, it took everything I was made of not to storm over and punch the shit out of him.

“Vin, you look sad.” Tenise came up to me and sat on the barstool beside me. She turned toward me, her knee brushing against mine.

I adjusted myself on the stool, trying to move away as best I could without having to sit on another stool but that only seemed to make her inch closer. “I’m fine,” I told her.

“Are you enjoying yourself?”

“I am.” I finished off my beer and signaled the waiter. “Can I just get a water please?”

He nodded and came back with a bottle of water.

“Thank you.” I twisted off the cap and finished off half the bottle before placing it on the bar top.

“Water?” Tenise raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

“Why not?”

“It’s your twenty-first birthday, Vin.” She took a sip of her red drink. I assumed it was some fruity concoction. Maybe cranberry juice and vodka. I had seen her drink that a time or two at the parties Rory threw every now and again.

“So? I don’t want to be hungover tomorrow,” I explained, which I wasn’t sure why I had to. I had always liked Tenise for Rory but lately, she was getting too close. It was just little things and I was sure it was innocent, but he was my best friend and that came first.

“We need to make a promise to each other,” Mason said, taking a sip of his beer.

“What’s that?” I moved to the empty spot beside him on the couch.

“We need to promise that we won’t let a girl get in the way of our friendship,” he said as Rory came into the living room.

“I agree.” Rory slumped onto the chair beside the couch. “Unless it’s your mom though.”

My head whipped around. “Dude, that’s my fucking mom.”

“Yeah and she’s hot as hell.” Rory shrugged. “You know it’s true,” he said, looking at Mason.

“I’m not saying shit.” Mason went back to drinking his beer.

“Leave my mom out of this but yes, I agree. No woman can come between us. Ever.” I shook my head, still not impressed that Rory thought my mom was hot.

“Deal.” Rory clinked his beer bottle against mine. “What about your sister?”

“Fuck off, asshat,” I snapped but I couldn’t help but laugh.

That conversation had been so long ago, I’d almost forgotten about it. But I definitely hadn’t forgotten about our pact.

“So you and that girl.”

My eyes flicked to Tenise. I had forgotten she was still sitting beside me after being stuck in my own head.

“I—” Something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. A man was hugging Gigi. Before I knew what I was doing, I was off the stool and stomping toward her.

My name was called but I couldn’t focus on anything other than finding out who the fuck was hugging my girl.

As I zeroed in on them, Gigi shoved the man back, a deep frown set between her brows. A breath of relief left me, but it still didn’t mean that I didn’t want his blood.

She stiffened, slowly turning my way. Something flashed behind her eyes when she saw me heading toward her.

The man looked my way, his gaze burning into me, but I kept my sight on Gigi.
