He shouted, pulling his fingers from my wound.

A scream tore through me as I stabbed him repeatedly. “You should have killed me when you had the chance!”

Blood splattered my hands, dripping to the ground beneath us as I shoved him back and off the bed.

I fisted the pen in both hands, slamming it down hard into the man’s eye once again.

“Shit, Ainsley.” Heavy arms wrapped around me, pulling me away from him.

A commotion sounded in the room, people milling about, barking orders and demands but all I could do was stare at the unmoving form on the floor.

“Shhh...pet, you’re fine.” Cyrus held me against him, rocking me back and forth. He continued whispering to me, trying to console me as best he could.

The sobs subsided but the terror, the fear that the man would jump up and try and attack me again, forced bile to my throat.

“What the hell happened in here?”

“Is she okay?”

Voices, so many words, but I didn’t know who was saying what. All I could focus on was Cyrus holding me. I focused on him because I didn’t know how to do anything else. He was all I needed. I just hoped he could forgive me for what just happened. It was a side of me I never knew was there and this bastard brought it out of me. I had feared all along that they would come back for those of us who had survived and escaped, but a part of me hoped that they had moved on. I had done everything I could to change my look and my life. I even moved across the country but clearly, that never helped.

“I got you, baby,” Cyrus muttered, holding me tight against him. “I don’t know what happened,” he told someone.

“Ainsley.” A gentle hand landed on my shoulder, making me jump.

My eyes shot to a woman crouching near us. She gave me a small smile and lifted her hands.

Can I check to make sure that you’re okay?

I blew out a slow breath. He ripped open my stitches.

The smile fell from her face.Let’s get you taken care of, so you can go home. Okay?

I nodded.

Cyrus kissed my temple. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.” He pushed out from beneath me, helping me to my feet.

The woman who I realized must have been a nurse, gently grabbed my hand, holding me steady. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”

I noticed then that the man was no longer on the floor. I glanced at Cyrus.

“They took him out,” he said gently. “The police are here and will want to talk to you. I won’t leave you and I’ll speak for you if you need.”

“She needs to be checked first. The police can wait,” the nurse told him. “I’m just going to check your wound.”

I helped her lift the gown to my waist.

“We’ll get you sorted.” She lowered the gown, patted my hand and quickly left the room, only to come back with another nurse. “We’ll move you to another room but we need to do an ultrasound to make sure he didn’t do any more damage than what he already did earlier. I’m assuming he’s the one who stabbed you originally?”

I nodded quickly, my eyes welling.

More staff came into the room with another bed. They helped me onto it but all I wanted was to leave and go home with Cyrus.

“I’ll be waiting right here.” Cyrus came up to the bed. “Wait.” He grabbed hold of the bar, stopping them from taking me out of the room. He leaned down to my ear. “Once they fix you up, I’m taking you out of here and somewhere safer.” He kissed my cheek.

I love you.

I love you, pet.
