I leaned back. Not too bad. You?

“Better now,” he murmured, running his thumb back and forth over my jaw. “Spend the day with me?”

I thought we weren’t meeting until tonight?

“Oh, I’m still taking you on our date, but I want to spend the afternoon with you too. If you want to that is.”

I do.

A cheeky grin spread on his handsome face. “Good. Do you need to tell anyone you’re leaving?”

I nodded, pulling away from him. I rushed back into the building to grab my bag and let Jay know that I’d be leaving early for the day. She was good about it, since I never had a set schedule. I just had to work a certain amount of hours each week. She and the other owners were good with whatever I set my schedule as.

When I ran back outside, Cyrus was sitting in the driver’s seat. I joined him but as I shut the door and turned back around to ask him what we were doing, he captured my mouth in a hard bruising kiss.

My hands cupped the back of his head of their own accord, pulling him harder against me. I almost forgot where we were when a husky chuckle left him.

“I knew there was a little sex kitten inside of you.”

I laughed, lightly punching him in the shoulder.

He winked, kissing my nose and pulling away from me. “Don’t worry, babe. You can hide her from me for as long as you want but I promise you, I will eventually get to meet her.”

Today. He was going to meet her today.

Cyrus smiled at me every so often while he drove us to my apartment. “We’ll head to your place and hang out there for a little bit.”

I nodded but he couldn’t see me. Damn words. I needed to speak to him, but I didn’t know how. Maybe I never would. Could I give him my voice? Could I trust him enough to give him that part of me I hadn’t given to anyone since before I was taken?

My thoughts traveled to those five years where I was missing. I wasn’t even sure if anyone had looked for me. Did my parents demand for me to be found? Did they think that I just upped and left without saying so? Did they cry, shed a tear for our estranged relationship before they died?

So many questions bounced around in my head. Questions I would never get the answers to.

Even though I was now safe, a part of me would be missing forever.

“Hey.” Cyrus cupped my hands that were resting on my lap. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s over. You’re safe, baby, and I promise to protect you.”

I looked at him then, leaning my head against the back of the seat. I gave him a slight nod.

While he stared out at the road ahead of us, I couldn’t help but watch him. Really look at him then. He was beautiful. But it was more than that. He had an air about him that indicated how he would protect those he loved first before even considering himself. He had a big heart and I prayed that one day, we could give our hearts to each other.

No matter what came of this, he had already helped me so much that I could never repay him.

When my building came into view, my stomach tumbled a bit knowing that we would once again be alone. I remembered everything we had done already. How his hands felt. How he looked. How he made me feel. How he held me after I fell apart in his arms. How he consoled me after I woke from nightmares. I remembered everything about him, and I was greedy for more.

“I can feel you staring, pet,” he said, laughing.

My cheeks burned, like they always did whenever he caught me doing something I shouldn’t have been.

He glanced my way. “I like that blush on your cheeks. Makes me wonder what the rest of you looks like with that pink on your skin.” He waggled his eyebrows.

I laughed, shaking my head.

Cyrus brought my hand up to his mouth, running his lips back and forth over my knuckles.

Once we pulled into the parking lot, he found an empty space and killed the engine before turning to me. “I’m going to be honest with you, Ainsley. I haven’t stopped thinking about you and these past weeks together. But as much as I’ve enjoyed myself, I want to make sure that you’re okay.”

I undid my seat belt and slid a little closer to him before cupping his face. I only nodded, hoping, no, praying that he could sense how much he meant to me. How our time together, had given me a strength I never thought I would ever feel again.
