I sniffled. “I’m pregnant.”

Amber

I expected him tosnap. To freak the fuck out and blame me for letting it happen. I knew it wasn’t my fault but when my ex reacted that way, it was hard not to expect the same from Sammy.

Aaron came around eventually and grew to get excited over the fact that I was carrying his baby but it had been too late at that point.

“I’m not him, Red.” Sammy grabbed my hand and slipped his fingers between mine. “I’m not.”

I leaned my forehead against his chest, taking a deep breath and inhaling the scent that made up him. Sammy Butcher. The man who refused to back down in the beginning until he got what he wanted and made me realize that I wanted it too.

Sammy didn’t comment or even ask if the baby was his. It was like he heard the news and accepted it instantly. He was an asshole most times but this part of him, I held it close, knowing he didn’t show it often.

I brought his hand up to my mouth and kissed the back of his knuckles.

“Look at me.”

I took a chance and met his gaze.

“Tell me something. Am I the first to know?”

I frowned, searching his face. “I don’t know what you’re implying.”

“Answer the damn question, Red.”

I huffed, rolling my eyes. “If you think I’ve known this for awhile, I haven’t. I found out today and called my mom. So technically, she’s the first to know and now Shawnee knows too because she found me throwing up when I got here.”

Sammy’s face softened. “You threw up?”

“Yeah, morning sickness is no joke,” I mumbled.

“How are you feeling now?” he asked gently.

“Better now that you know.” I stepped away from him and grabbed my things. “I have to start my shift, but I can try and leave early.”

Sammy came toward me and grabbed the bags from my hands.

“I can carry—”

He crushed his mouth against mine, dropping the bags to the floor and circling his arms around me. Before the kiss could turn into anything more, he placed a soft peck on my forehead and ran the back of his hand over my lower stomach.

My eyes welled at the gentle contact.

Much to my surprise, he lowered to his knees and lifted my shirt. He laid gentle kisses along my stomach and muttered soft words that I couldn’t hear. But that act alone forced a sob from my lips.

His eyes shot to mine at the sound. Jumping to his feet, he wrapped me up in his arms as I cried against him. I wasn’t exactly sure why I was crying. Maybe it was due to fear of how Sammy would react and now that we had gotten it out of the way, I was crying with happiness.

When my cries subsided, I pulled away from him and wiped my face.

“You good?” he asked, his brows furrowed.

“I am.” I thought a moment. “I need to make a doctor’s appointment.”

“I’ll be there,” he said without me even having to ask. “Every step of the way, Amber. I will be there.”

“Thank you,” I whispered.

He nodded once and gave me a look, but it was a look I didn’t quite understand. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t this. He was calm. Maybe too calm.
