I nod. “Okay. I’m sorry. I just can’t right now.”

I put the finishing touches on my makeup. I’m going to the latest action movie solo because I didn’t want to ask anyone to go with me. My ritual was to always go with Mase, but now things are different. I don’t have many friends and the people in my life have better things to do than go to a movie with me. Khalani has Aiden and Linda doesn’t like the movies. So that leaves Colton and Leo. They would feel uncomfortable taking me because of Aiden and Mase. I know I turned Gabe down earlier, but honestly, I hate to start over and meet someone new. He obviously wants more than friendship.

My door opens and Khalani appears. “You look hot.” She takes in my white lace flouncy skater skirt and pink top. “I love the Converse sneakers paired with the skirt. It looks good.”

I glance at myself in the mirror. “Is It too much?”

She sits on my bed. “No, it is actually perfect. You should hurry if you want to make it to the movie. All the guys are hanging out downstairs and right about now, Aiden is probably going to convince you to not go by yourself.”

“Shit. Okay, I’m done.”

“I can tell you are nervous.”

I grimace. “Can you tell? I feel stupid going by myself.”

She pinches her fingers. “A little.” She laughs and I giggle.

I walk down the hallway with Khalani and when we reach the staircase I see my mother talking animatedly to the guys.

“Oh, there she is,” she says when I take the last step down the stairs.

Everyone’s stare flits my way. Khalani walks over to sit with Aiden. He smiles and gives me a silent nod.

“You look beautiful. What’s the occasion?” my mother asks, looking confused to see that I’m the only one dressed to go out.

“I’m going to catch a movie.”

“Alone?”

I roll my eyes. “Yes, alone.”

The guy’s glance at me but one face and set of eyes I cannot acknowledge is sitting silently. I can see Mason from the corner of my eye, but I refuse to even look at him. I have avoided him and changed classes so I don’t even have to sit with him. The only reason he is here is because of Aiden.

“Have fun on your date,” Mason says sarcastically.

What is his problem? I didn’t know he would be here. If I did, I would have left before they arrived.

“I’m not going on a date,” I mock. “Unless you count going by yourself.”

I quickly leave the house and get in my car, avoiding the questions that are on everyone’s tongue.

My phone vibrates from an incoming text. I press the button so my car reads it to me.

Khalani: Mason is about to go apeshit because he thinks you are really going on a date. Just wanted you to know.

Lucy: I don’t know why. He wanted me to stay away, and that is what I’m doing. Moving on. He obviously wants me out of his life. Fuck him.

Khalani: I think that is exactly what he needs from you. To fuck. He is unbearable and grouchy. Colton is annoyed with him, and he is always easygoing.

Lucy: He can go fuck himself. He can call Gloria or the cheer team. I’m sure they would love to help the football players out.

Khalani: Overhearing the guys, he hasn’t slept with anyone. He has been moping around the house and got benched last game. He’s being a total dick to everyone.

Mason is great on the field, and I cannot believe they benched him. Mason Montgomery doesn’t get benched in a game. Ever. What is going on with him? I have avoided attending the football games so I wouldn’t have to see him. I haven’t spoken to him as promised and I shouldn’t care, but I do. Mason will always be a part of me. He was everything to me for most of my life. There is no other man in my life that makes me feel like Mase. No one.

I remember how I would look forward every day to seeing him or hearing his voice. He was everything. The one guy a girl sees as her forever. He was it for me. But I was never it for him, just a mistake.
