Agone refused to let that happen. He wrested control from Seren and returned them to the mortal world. They crashed again with flesh meeting metal in a haze of fists and kicks with Agone on top and Seren pinned beneath him, landing blow after blow. Each punch landed beautifully. His head snapped back from a brutal uppercut. He bit his tongue, nearly in two. Ichor filled his mouth. He swallowed it down. Demon ichor didn’t belong in the mortal world.

With his knees, Agone pinned Seren’s arms. He looked up at him, enraged. “I won’t let you destroy her like Ayleth.”

Anger pulsed through Agone. “I didn’t destroy Ayleth. She took her life after you accused her of witchcraft. A death sentence in medieval England.”

Seren stopped struggling to be free. “Lies. I found what was left of her body. And evidence of your presence.”

Agone nodded once. “Truth. She took a sleeping potion, then walked into the woods. Wild dogs ripped her apart. They ripped out her throat before she could even cry for help. By the time I felt her agony, it was too late. She bled out in my arms. The note in her hands detailed her reasons.” Blocked memories surfaced like bloated recently buried bodies. The torture of finding her seared as if it had just happened. Sorrow, a useless, inhibiting emotion he wanted no part of.

Eden!

Agone’s senses went on high alert. His head whipped around, his gaze roaming the area. The fight started in her apartment, but now they were on top of a decimated truck in the rear of Eden’s parking lot. And Eden? He already knew she was gone. How the hell had she left without him knowing? It wasn’t difficult because he was distracted. He allowed himself to be distracted when he chose petty violence over keeping her safe.

Wisely, she ran and left them to beat each other senseless and destroy her home. At this rate, she didn’t need them protecting her when she did a better job of it. Agone leaped off Seren. “Eden’s in danger.”

Seren was already on his feet, his sword clutched in his hand again, body tense, prepared to attack. This time, Agone wouldn’t play with him. This time, he would put Seren down permanently. Nothing and no one came between him and Eden.

Seren straightened, and his sword vanished. “I will save her. You are not needed.” He vanished.

Agone was pleased with Seren’s new priorities, but not with being left behind. The angel wouldn’t be the only one protecting Eden. Not as long as Agone still existed.

???

Eden wasn’t a religious being. She believed in Karma and not a God who let the innocent suffer. Yet, she couldn’t deny the angel in her midst.

The halo and the pure white wings didn’t cinch the deal. The peace she felt when his gaze landed on her. That’s what did it.

“Who the fuck are you?” Maybe she shouldn’t have cursed, but it slipped out of her mouth on its own. Anyway, it was a rhetorical question. She didn’t really expect an answer. Not when the angel lunged for Agone, who met him head on. Their impact shook the building.

“You will not have her!” The angel shouted as fists were delivered with brutal accuracy. The punches became a blur. She barely kept up. But the meaty sound of fists meeting flesh didn’t lie.

Her? Who’s her? Did he mean me?

Instead of being a spectator, Eden climbed to her feet. She snatched up her backpack and shoved her feet into a pair of flip-flops by the front door. “Time to go.”

Three locks.Click, click, click. She yanked the door open, and hauled ass, leaving behind Harry—who she couldn’t help—and the destruction of all her worldly possessions.

Flip-flops again! When would she learn? Too late to change her choice of foot ware, Eden risked bodily injury and kept running. This was her chance to escape, likely her only chance, and she wouldn’t let it pass her by. The chance of a broken bone was worth it.

She’d get in her car, get away, go to the police, and report what?Agone, the sexy ghost who could walk through walls, and the mysterious angel, who Agone attacked when he blinked into her apartment, are beating the shit out of each other.

Totally believable.

Two flights down, and her car was right there! She was almost free when two bodies landed on the roof of her car. It crumpled like wet cardboard. Glass and tires exploded, slicing her arms when she shielded her face.

No time wasted screaming and wailing over the death of her car. She ran. How were lights not snapping on and people not hanging out of their windows at the chaos and commotion? How were there no sirens filling the air? No cell phones recording the destruction for social media to comment and gather likes.

She worried about all of that after she was safely away. The complex abutted a park and a nature preserve. Planning to come out on the other side near the highway, she headed that way instead of rounding the complex and leaving from the main entrance.

She stumbled more times than she could count. The flip-flops were not helping. As soon as she reached the grass, she yanked them off and pretended she was an Olympic sprinter.

The grass was not as soft as she thought it would be. Slowing down wasn’t an option even as random pebbles cut into her feet, dropping her sprint to a hobble.

“Keep moving. Keep moving.” Little pep talks always helped her before. They’d help her now. Keep her going. She stumbled again and paused for a breath. She looked behind her. Fog and shadows and no sign of anyone. Eerie silence enveloped the park. Not a bird, not even a cricket chirped. Now was a good time to call the police.

Out of nowhere, her unwanted guests appeared in front of her again. Still trying to rip each other’s heads off.

“What the fuck!” she screamed.
