“Yes.” The room shook from Belial’s anger. “You three lack the vision to see where this will end. Heaven conspires to keep our King chained.”

“And you’re helping them,” Asmodeus said.

“That’s all you three can see. I seeded infants to find them later.”

“For what purpose?” Belphegor asked. After his initial outburst, he was the calmest of the trio.

Agone thought he knew Belial’s purpose. That proved wrong. His prince fed him bullshit, and he’d swallowed it down and licked the plate afterward.

“They were created to keep our King caged.”

“You helped create them, you traitorous bastard.” Asmodeus surged to his feet. “This means war!”

“Against you and your entire realm.” Beelzebub managed to climb to his feet. Belial couldn’t hold them much longer, and all that stood between them and him was Agone.

And he wanted him dead.

Agone gripped his blade tighter. If he caught Belial by surprise, he could kill him. Then he’d have to deal with the rest of the princes. It was almost worth it. The thought of leaving Eden without his protection stayed his hand.

“Brothers.” Belial threw his arms wide. “You misunderstand.”

“You misunderstand, brother,” Belphegor spat. “We tried that before and failed.” He settled back on his throne. His involvement only lasted so long. Shait, his First Order demon did all his heavy lifting and thinking.

“Because Heaven divided our King’s power between this realm and the next.”

Beelzebub and Asmodeus paused in their struggle to be free.

“Didn’t know that, did you?” Belial continued. “Gaining his freedom in either realm, means he gains his freedom in both, making him twice as strong. All we have to do is enable that to happen by capturing the infants, eleven Chosen females—”

“Ten,” Shait shouted, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. “Belial speaks the truth.” He stepped from behind his prince’s throne and strolled into the center of the room. “I’ve already found one and drained her dry. I used a replica of the Celestial Seal, poured a fraction of her blood on it and —”

“And what!” Belial demanded a second before Agone did.

“It scratched the surface.”

A collective gasp circled the room.

“Who works to free him in the other realm?” Asmodeus spoke.

Belial shrugged. “I don’t know. Iaiél didn’t share. Suffice to say, the Seraph cannot lie. Our King freed changes Earth. Changes Heaven. And changes Hell. Are you with me, brothers, or against me?”

A rousing cheer shook the conclave and spelled doom for the Chosen and Eden.

Agone’s heart shrank. Then he remembered he didn’t have a heart. He was a demon, and this was what demons did. Lied and betrayed.

Another cheer shook the room.

“Agone, come.” Belial beckoned, ichor running from his palm to collect in the same flagon he sipped his demon brew.

The princes and their First Order demons waited, their hands sliced in preparation for a new pact.

Agone strode from behind Belial’s throne, his dagger still clutched in his hand. He stopped in front of his prince and looked him in the eye as he dragged the dagger across his hand. And sealed his fate, the only fate he’d ever had since the beginning of time. For a moment, just a moment, he was more than what he was created to be. For a few precious days, this wasn’t a villain. He loved and was loved. Though the words were never spoken, in every glance, in every touch, it was a living presence between them.

Each prince and their second in command donated their ichor to the flagon.

Boldly, Agone took the flagon from Belial as sulfur burned though his body and ashes coated his tongue. Themanhe was with Eden was gone. The First Order demon remained. Agone’s ichor was first to coat the bottom of the flagon. “I swear my fealty to you and this pact.”

Soon, his essence mingled with the essence of the princes and their First Order demons. The pact was seal. Belial had painted a target on Eden’s back, front, and side. She and all the Chosen were in the crosshair, and open season had begun.
